Default 98 Died, no clue where to start.

Hello, so 1998 Jeep Cherokee, 4.0 I6. Was taking a fire road up the mountain 2 nights ago and the jeep was running perfect. All guages were normal, nothing seemed out of the ordinary at all. CEL was on but it always is because my exhaust has a leak. Was cruising at about 2200 RPM's when without any warning it died. Everything electrical was still on but RPM's dropped to 0 and that was it.

As of now, it will turn over but it won't start, if I try giving it gas while cranking it smells like fuel but doesn't seem to make any difference. Anyway, I was just now able to get it back into my driveway, after doing some research I believe I can rule out the CPS but I could be wrong, I don't have a lot of knowledge on it.

Tomorrow morning before work I am going to take a look at it, my initial thought was fuel system? Does that seem far off?

Why do you think you can rule out the CPS? It's a prime suspect.

If you are smelling fuel, it's probably spark, but testing beats guessing.

Check for fuel at the rail, by priming it, the take the cap off the Schrader valve and press in the stem. You should get a very small spurt of fuel. If there is NONE, you almost certainly have a fuel problem. If there is some, you still MAY have a fuel problem. You need a fuel pressure gauge to be sure.

Check for spark. Easy to do - pull one of the plug wires and hold it close to ground while someone cranks. You should see spark. If not, follow the "no spark" trail.

Test. Don't guess.

Ok, thanks for the info, I will run the codes this morning before work, waiting for my friend to give me his tester, and I will go through the plugs and see what I can find.

The symptoms you're describing sound exactly like my CPS failure. How did you rule it out?

From what I read, with CPS Failure the jeep will still start and run. Which I just ran the codes and I am wrong.

First Code - PO320

and

Second Code - PO463

Mine would go out if it got to hot in the engine bay.(traffic with AC on in hot sun.). When it died it would crank but not start until it cooled. Pulled codes and also got P0320. When you replace it get a Mopar replacement.

The interesting to me was that the check engine light did not come on. I just got it home after it stalled one day and said might as well check the codes...well there's my problem. Lol.

Default cps

I've replaced mine twice on my 98 Cherokee, the wires break inside the insulation where the wires enter the sensor. From years of vibration.
