So now you've added to your experiences working on jeeps. I hope you find it satisfying fixing it yourself.

So im a bit confused, i got the jeep all done filled the pumpkin up , and took her for a spin. Im still hearing a metal rubbing sound coming from the back, i changed both seals and both bearings, the gears looked fine no abnormal signs of wear, i check the service guide for a detailed pic of what to look for. I put new brakes and rotors on when i did this , but the sound was there before i did that, i had a bad leaking seal so i had to change them anyways , what else could be making this noise. I checked the pinion gear when i was in the diff there is no play in it at all. ??

Okay, I'm going to tell you what happened on my WJ, which is a little different because it has cartridge bearings so there is a little axial play in the shafts, but after installing new calipers, brackets, rotors and pads on all 4 wheels, I had a squeaking going on when I WASN'T using the brakes. It sounded like it was coming from the front, but taking it up to my mechanic and him hearing it roll across the parking lot, said it was coming from the rear. We put it up on the lift and tore it apart. My e-brake hasn't worked in 3 years, but the shoes were retracted and were not dragging. After much consternation and discussion, we determined this;

The brake backing plates have a 1/2" or so wide lip that's supposed to keep debris from getting to the e-brake shoes and the rotors overhang this so the shoes run that same distance from the actual edge of the drums. Rust had built up on that lip and was rubbing on the rotors until the brakes were applied which stabilized the rotors. I was a little reluctant to accept this, but after power wire-brushing all that crap off, they stopped squeaking! He wasn't going to charge me anything because he said he learned something that day, but I gave him $20 for the "coffee fund" anyway. This solution was actually discovered by his Latino mechanic who doesn't communicate very well, but knows his stuff! He has 2 Latino mechanics, Angel owns a TJ and speaks pretty good English, but likes to party, and Roberto who keeps his mind on the job but knows very little of the language. It's sort of fun to listen to them banter in rapid-fire Spanish and even argue. I had a little trouble trusting Roberto only because I had trouble communicating with him, but he proved himself this time! I told Dave, the owner, "This guy's good." He said "That's why I hired him!" It was a good time with the 4 of us staring at those brakes and scratching our heads.

I hope this is your problem as well. It seems the rust just touches the rotor and makes the backing plate vibrate.

interesting i was looking at that dust plate , it looked really close to the rotor, my buddy tried telling me , his jeep makes a rubbing noise and its his e brake adjuster. im off tomorrow , so i guess its time to search for this noise.
