Default trans swap question

ok. so i have a 94 zj my trans is slipping and i hate the all wheel drive. my 94 xj i had was 2wheel 4hi and 4 low can i take a trans and transfer case out of a 94 xj and stick it in my zj? my zj is a 4.0L so the bell housing should all be the same but will the length on the trans and transfer case be the same? will the driveshafts bolt up? as long as i have the shifter and 4wheel drive shifter hooked up it should all work right? just the plugs may be different so i wont get a speed reading? has anyone done this? or the does anyone know if this will work?

An XJ tranny and a ZJ tranny are two different transmissions. It takes a ton of work and a wiring harness from an early 93 ZJ to install a AW4. Not worth the headache.

So the bell housings went the same? And what wiring isn't the only wiring for the speed control and stuff won't it still shift? And if not is there zj's that came with a np231 that I can find and take trans a transfercase out of and stick in mine. Cause I want a np231 but I also need a trans so I was hoping for a direct bolt on and go replacement. If I don't care about some electrical working right just want the np231 and a trans that shifts right what should I go with?

My ZJ came with a 231, so I know they're out there. It's not just a matter of some simple rewiring to install an AW4 into a ZJ, trust me, it's not worth the headache and your free tranny will end up costing more. An AW4 will bolt in, but that's about it.

either 231 or 242 will swap in place of that 249. You will probably need to change the front dirveshaft too

all ZJ/XJ transfer cases bolt right up. if the 231 is internal slip yoke, you shouldnt need to change your rear driveshaft either.

The cv is on the axle side. All the cases have u joints where they attach to the transfer case

Google search 249 transfer case swap 231 or 242 and there is some good picture and write ups. I am in the process of doing this myself. Picked up a 231 and will be starting the project soon.

Question for the experts What kind of fault lights am I going to have going from the 249 to a 231?
I have a 96 GCL with the 5.2
