Key & key fob search
Hi. I have a 02 GC limited. Didn't come with a key fob or extra key.
I'd like to get 1 spare key & a key fob.
I have 1 ignition key (grey one) & 1 that just opens the door (I think)
Is there a way to program another ignition key if I only have one? I've heard that if you have 2 keys, you can program a 3rd, but it doesn't work to program one if I only have 1 grey key.
How do I go about getting an extra key? Is it a dealer only thing, or is there another way. (locksmith, etc?)
I'd also like to get a key fob, but how do I know which one to get? (Don't really want to buy through a dealer.... too much $$$) Is there a code on them to tell if I have the right one?
The previous owner bought a fob off ebay & had a dealer program it (supposedly) & he said it didn't work. I could get one from a salvage yard, but I need to know which one to get & the jeep dealerships are NO help at all. (they just want to sell me stuff, not help at all)
When I open the door with the key, the alarm goes off occasionally. If I can't get a key fob, is there a way to disable the alarm so it doesn't go off?
Thanks for any info!

No input? I'd like to get a spare key & key fob soon.
I went somewhere the other day & got locked out because the ONLY door with a keyed lock.... was froze up. & the best part was it was about 20 below zero wind-chill out.
Seems like a real **** poor design only having 1 door that can be opened with a key.
(good thing its fairly easy to break into) lol

Thanks for the link.
They all have 2 styles of key fobs, but I don't know which one I need because I don't have any to compare to.
I'll look into it more & see if I can figure something out.

You can get another key from the dealer because they can program it with their computer. A friend of mine had a Toyota Rav 4 key made at his dealer and it cost him $65. The fob transmits a coded digital signal that only the dealer can get by quizzing the vehicle's computer. Then the fob then can be programmed to transmit that signal. Easy to do, but pricey.
Speaking of which, I need a clock spring because my air bag warning goes off anytime I turn a corner. The clock spring costs $300!

I got keys from eBay. My WJ also only came with one key.
I don't remember what I searched under, "chipped" or something like that.
I got 2 for $12. Had to go to the dealer to get a second programmed, and he went ahead and did the third also. Seems like it was $30 bucks or so for the programming.

Dave: thanks for the info. I know the dealer can make new keys & fobs, but i'm trying to avoid the almost $200 dollar charge for doing so. I'm just looking for a cheaper alternative than a dealer.
Is your clockspring problem on a Cherokee? I got a recall notice about airbags a while ago. Maybe that's what the recall is about, i'm not sure.
Mchlwise: The jeeps previous owner bought a fob off of e-bay & had it dealer programmed & it didn't work..... so i'm a little leery of trying that & it not working.

You can buy the keys you need on ebay and they also have the fabs too. Here is the link to both.

Even though I looked them up for mine, they will still work on yours. I purchased keys and a fab from ebay and they work great. You just have to go to the dealer to get them programmed.
