Default I need advise with oil

so I have a 93 grand Cherokee v8 with over 220,000. So my jeep has been blowing smoke out the tail pipe and I would assume it’s just burning oil. It usually starts to blow smoke once the jeep has been running for about 15mins. So there are times I have to put additional oil because it burns it up. I purchased 2 quarts of oil from a grocery store Winco it was a 10w-30 and I can’t remember the brand name or if it was just conventional or not. When I used it I noticed that it stopped blowing smoke. Crazy right. So last night I did the oil change on my jeep, I used 10w-30 high mileage castrol synthetic blend and I noticed that this morning when I was driving it started to blow smoke again!!! So why is it doing this? Is it because it’s a synthetic blend or is it the brand or what the heck?!

I highly doubt the type of oil had anything to do with the diminished smoke, and I can tell you it was still using oil at the same rate. To me it sounds like your rings are tired, and the motor need a rebuild.

Yeah that makes sense I don’t think the vehicle has had a rebuild done ever. But why did I not see any smoke for a bit until I did the oil change?

As long as we are talking about smoking. What are you smoking? Whatever happened, if anything did. Is unrelated to changing your oil.

I had to think about this for a while, BUT pull the valve covers off and clean out the oil drains. Oil is probably not draining freely and pooling in the valve area and submerging the stem seals on the rearmost cylinders. This is why it doesn't smoke for the first 15 minutes. It takes that long for the heads to fill up. This is a common problem with older smallblock Chevys. With them, there is only a 3/8" hole for all the oil to drain thru and they get crapped up with sludge easily. It got so every time I replaced valve cover gaskets, I ran a gun cleaning brush thru the drains. I'd be willing to bet that's why the gaskets were leaking anyhow.

Let me know if I was right.
