so i was on the freeway and heard a growling noise, just a couple seconds after my u-joint exploded and the drive shaft was slung around and fell out into the middle land of the freeway. then cars kept hitting it, so it goes the damage is i deed a new drive shaft and it cracked my t case, should i put a used 242 back in and get a junkyard drive shaft or spend some more for a 231 with sye and use a front drive shaft for the rear??? i just dono

 

231 should be cheaper to buy and more plentiful.

 

I'm not too familiar yet with cherokee running gear. I can give my advice though. Your lucky that no one got hurt and no one is hitting you up for money to fix there car. In this case if it were me I would look at some after market parts or upgraded parts. You'll be better off with stronger parts if you have the extra cash. Of course this is my opinion. This happened to me as well. Did you find out why it happened, after my lift the yoke was hitting the u-joint and after a while I guess it gave up growled for a couple of seconds and then split the t-case in two. Pretty scary stuff. And I went with another 242 after mine blew.

 

Just for ease of replacement, I would stick with the 242.

BUT, Like was said previously, the 231 is more plentiful. and perhaps even cheaper.

Bottomline: Look for the 242.
Can't find one...then I foresee a 231 in your future.

As for d/s if you get a j/y d/s...replace the joints before installing.

And yes, you are lucky niether you nor anyone else were hurt.

Did you actually crack the case..or just the cover?

GO with the 242 better t-case IMO.

I'd go with either case, I love my 231 and my 242. I'd say it's gonna come down to price and availability on which one you throw in there. Although the F/T 4WD is nice on the 242...
