Default Help With my new jeep, Code P1494

Hello all,

I purchased a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.0L last week, shortly after purchasing the check engine light come on and gave me code P1494. I read on forums to look for the 90 elbow that comes off the intake manifold, I did and found someone has taken the elbow off and stuck a bolt in it. They have modified the EVAP line on the Jeep, I can't for the life of me figure out where the elbow original plugged into the intake manifold. I asking if someone can please post some photo or the correct tech diagrams, so I can figure out how the EVAP Lines should be configured. Also if someone might have the service manual i can download the would be appreciated. I posted some pictures of what mine looks like.

pacificcoastmanuals.com

93 mbs compressed pdf files on everything about your jeep. $7.99+tax. It's a copy of the FSM used by the dealer techs.

Smart move buying the manual. It will serve you well, once you've familiarized yourself with it. I can see the mis-connection already. But for now a nudge in the right direction will get you started on this issue, go to manual section EWJ-25. Start at sheet 19, paragraph heading "Leak Detection Pump Monitor (If Equipped)" and read through that to understand the hows & why's for code P1494.

You should be able to proceed from there by following diagrams, descriptions and the remaining from sheet 25 and onward (for your 4.0). Good reading and educational. When understood, with the hookups corrected and codes cleared, go through a drive cycle (or some) to see if code returns. If it does then perform diagnostics procedures. Sometimes a bad gas cap can cause the condition that led the PO to erroneously diagnose, mis-connect and/or plug lines (then giving up on it out of frustration) and other times a smoke test can reveal cause(s). Good luck. Let us know what you ultimately find & fix.

Hey, ya' know, sometimes (too often, actually) the Jeep geek in me comes out. Being that you too are a seasoned member, jon-d, I have no doubt that there's a Jeep geek in you just waiting to shine through.

Besides, in this case it was a "been there, done that" situation and I recalled that my solution came from the section that covers the emission control system.

You may not find the leak detection pump easily. It's underneath the air filter box, mounted on the frame up against the radiator bulkhead. PITA to get to.
