Default help identifying a part-WJ

I have a 2000 jeep GC. It is leaking from the seal at the rear of the transfer case. There is a small scratch in the housing (or cone). I have tried gasket seal. It has a new seal but it will not hold fluid due to the scratch. I need a new housing. I was told it is called an "extension housing". Jeep dealer calls it a "retainer". I spoke with them over the phone and explained it to the best of my ability but that is what they call it. They gave me their part # of 5066086AA. They also had an old part # of 5012332AA but they are unsure whether they can find the part. I checked online for the "extension housing" and it is listed anywhere between a 93 thru 2002, excluding the 2000 and 2001. Does anyone know where I can find the part shown in the pics, new, either online or in a store? What part am I looking for and a possible part number?

Transfer case tail-cone? It looks like thats what you're asking about. I found one for my jeep (NP242, same as GC) at a local Junkyard. Clean and uncracked. $25, I pulled.

Mine is a 247J transfer case. I checked on other "extension housings" and they look completely different from this. I do plan on checking junkyards. We'll see...

Well just an opinion: if you're going to replace something, upgrade it. I don't know what they make as far as SYE kits, but if you're planning on lifting/getting into off roading, you might as well upgrade when you replace.

You can just replace that seal.

I think the scratched/broken housing is keeping the seal from getting good contact and sealing.

Thankyou!! I am glad someone read my entire post and knows what I am talking about. I am heading to a junkyard tomorrow to see what I can find.

Of course! I got you brotha. I didn't realize you were talking about the newer Grand Cherokee, I was thinking older style with the 242. Hopefully you find some wrecked Jeep with good parts. Just a thought, take brake cleaner with you to clean off any parts you get to make sure they dont have the same problem. Good luck!

Loctite Corp. has a sealer that will fill up scratches in the seal gland and stop your leak WITHOUT going to the trouble of changing the extension housing. I don't know the product number, but I've used it on industrial machinery before. It worked on a machine that was so worn that the new seal just about slid in.
