No, it's completely different.
Oh....wait! it IS a rear axle. That's when similarities end.

I'm on Grand Cherokee, WJ, number five, and having had to replace axle shafts on two of them, they have different gear ratios, and idk but may have different mounting depending on body style .

To start with, the tread width is 4" wider. Then the wheel bolt circle is 5X5 where yours is 5X4.5. Also, the rear suspension is a 3-link on the 99 and a 4-link on the ZJ. I think the spring seats are even different. And good luck matching the drum brakes to disc system.

You are totally correct, I had forgotten the older style grand had the 5x4.5 bolt circle and the WJ has 5x5 bolt circle and as said the wj is wider than the older grand cherokee

thats what i was about to say, they introduced the ZJ in '92 for the '93 MY
OP, you want the rearend from a '99 to an '04 GRAND cherokee.
Make sure its the same gear ratio as the one you have now or you will be sorry if you ever use the 4WD again.
In my local junkyard they have more ZJ and WJ (what yours is) Grand Chero's than any other jeep, so if that holds true elsewhere you may be in luck.

Yeah and as stated the gear ratio is the key. In general, by me rear ends are fairly cheaply priced, might just better find out the gear ratio and just get one from a yard to be safe.

Likely your best bet, if they co-operate, is to get ahold of your local Chrysler dealership's parts department and ask them to look it up. You'll have to give them year and model and usually the last 8 of the Vin, then from there they should be able to tell you what gear ratio you should have in that jeep. What it was optioned with so to speak.

There are several websites where you can get your build sheet yourself. All you need is the VIN.
