Grand Cherokee Ask the Question Thread
I just bought a 1999 Jeep grand Cherokee that had been sitting for 3 years. The jeep turns over but it keeps backfiring through the intake. I replaced the timing chain, the coil pack, spark plugs, and camshaft sensor. Has anyone ran into the problem before and knows a solution.

Hey,
I’ve spent 6 weeks and abo 1000$ trying to find my problem. It started with clunking when I hit a bump to grinding and clunking with any left turn and while I’m going straight when the clunking starts it feels like a tire is bouncing. I don’t feel it in the seat or steering wheel but I can feel it in my gas pedal or brake when my foot is on either. And recently I’ve noticed if I take it out of overdrive almost all clunking stops except for the clunking going over bumps. It’s driving me crazy. I’ve replaced drag links, tie rods, upper control arm bushings, lower control arms, sway bar links and pulled my carrier out and changed carrier bearings as well.

I recently bought a 1994 ZJ with the 5.2 and QuadraTrac. It is very clean and the original owner, an older gentleman provided a folder with every receipt for everything he has ever done including oil changes.
It was running great and all was well. Now, it will only start in Neutral and runs rough when it does start.
One of the last receipts for repairs, completed a couple weeks before I bought it, was $380 for a fuel system problem. Unfortunately there are no details of what they fixed. The shop that performed the repair is out of business. I called the old man and he does not want to help but did say that there was some sort of vent that needed to be replaced either on the fuel tank or above it as the fuel pump was sucking so hard the tank was starting to collapse in on itself.
Does any of that make sense? I do not know where to start. I did not pay all that much for the Jeep and fell in love with it as it was obviously well maintained and was exceptionally clean.
I hope i did not get in over my head.

vented gas cap failure will cause this condition of tank collapse engine stall .
open cap allow air in and restart engine .
First off thanks for letting me be here first time here.
I am looking for some help. Idk if I’m missing something or not.
I have a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.0L
I do not know much about the jeep. But I replaced a number of parts
ignition
ignition coil
distributor cap & rotor
map sensor
up and down steam o2 sensors
along with a crankshaft position sensor
now my question is. If my code comes up on my old sensor and my new sensor. P1391 is it my sensor that’s no good or is it something else??
let me elaborate the jeep starts amazing no problem but once it gets to normal running temp it dies. It will start again right away but will run for about ten seconds and die. Then you let it sit it runs then dies when it gets to normal running temp then dies. Makes no sense to me. I have orders a new crankshaft position sensor and a new camshaft position sensor for the distributor. Could there be other causes besides the pcm. I’ve wiggled the connectors on the pcm and no change in the motor running.
sorry for the novel and Tia for any help

Hi everyone, I’m new here and at my wits end.
I have a 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee, 4.0L. I’ve been having an issue for months now where the Jeep will randomly stall, and then not start back up for several minutes. The stalling will only occur when I’m stopped, barely moving (like as I start to come out of a complete stop), or when I shift into drive. It’s not every time, and it never happens before the engine warms up.
I replaced the crank sensor 3 times with no luck on any of them. That had no luck. I also replaced the TPS.
I’ve verified that I’m not having a loss of spark or fuel pressure, and cleaned my air intake thoroughly.
At first, the only CEL code I was getting was P0118, which is for the ECT sensor circuit. I replaced that and checked the wiring to make sure there were no breaks, but that code has persisted.
I took it to a mechanic who hooked up a readout for all the sensors. He verified that the crank and cam were working properly. He also found that at times, the voltage for the ECT sensor and the O2 sensors would sit at 5v (when the engine is hot, the ECT sensor should be around 1.4v). We pulled the plug and checked the sensor with a multimeter, and the sensor itself is reading the correct voltage. It was the PCM that’s showing the incorrect voltage. When he saw these irregularities, that’s when the car would stall on him.
I then replaced the PCM. That didn’t solve the issue, but I’m now also getting CEL code P0753 (I’m still getting the P0118 code), which is for a transmission solenoid.
I’m waiting to get back into the mechanic so he can look at the sensor readouts again and see if the ECT and O2 sensors are still intermittently reading the wrong voltage.
In my own research, I’ve found information referring to the Jeep possibly entering limp mode, but I don’t understand exactly what limp mode does, and if the Jeep being in it would create these symptoms.
Finally, as a side note, my instrument cluster has been going bad. Over the years the lights have gone out. During these issues, I’ve noticed that the temperature gauge isn’t always working. It will intermittently remain at 0 and not display the temperature, and will also suddenly come back on at random. I’m ordering another instrument cluster to see if that fixes that issue, but I’m also wondering if the instrument cluster going bad could somehow be causing this issue.

I have a 2016 that is making a thump knock sound. I hear it best under the jeep where the trans and engine meet. There is no inspection plate to check the flex plate. Anyone have similar sound ? Only happens when warmed up over 110° and only in neutral or park. When reved it doesn't do it. Other than that it runs and starts great.
Idk if anyone still is active on here but I thought id at least try. My wj has almost a jerking or power loss when around mid throttle. Also cranks for a few seconds after warmed up. There's no check engine lights or codes coming up when I scan it. Starts perfect when cold. I've replaced fuel filter, and spark plugs and neither did anything. Rpms don't change while making jerking feeling
