Been searching the interwebs, as well as CF, and either find no info or conflict / incomplete answers.
Buddy of mine is (most likely) buying a 97 ZJ Limited 5.2. Trying to piece together a cheap lift for him witih some 2" spacers up front, shocks, and stock XJ front coils for the rear. However, after doing some searching online, I've come across conflicting/incomplete information about using the XJ coils in the rear of the ZJ.
Here's the meat of the question... Yes or no, will the STOCK XJ coils give the REAR of a ZJ a couple inches of lift? I thought I remember seeing someone here that did this.

Already read this one... was not helpful at all because they're not talking about STOCK XJ front coils.
Now THIS one.... this one, I didn't run across. This statement right here confirms what I've heard....

This is VERY helpful... so thank you for that

I've read this one too. Also not helpful because they're talking about swapping the front ZJ coils to the rear of the ZJ... which is good for between 4-6" of lift depending on which ZJ coils you get.Originally Posted by marklar134

"I second the notion that the stock XJ coil will give you around 2.0~2.5" of lift. All bets are off with aftermarket springs, as each manufacturer makes them different lengths/rates. For instance, a 4.5" RE spring off an XJ might give you 2" more lift than a 3.5" Tera or Rancho spring off a ZJ because RE springs are stiffer than their competition. Then again, it might be equal because the XJ RE coils is a lighter overall rate than the ZJ TF coil. You really won't know until you mount it up and drive on them 6mos or so, because they WILL settle. Here's another one for you...did you know that Rancho and ProComp both used to use the same exact spring for the XJ and ZJ fronts, even though the XJ needs a softer one? (and maybe still do) Anyway, the point is that since we don't know what the spring rate is on all these aftermarket springs, it's extremely difficult to tell how much lift you'll net.

Learn how to type a coherent description of your issue and some one might be able to help you!

Hey guys, I'm having an issue with my 2wd in my 97 zj cherokee. I wish I could be more detailed, but basically the rear diff is leaking, so need new seal and probably check gear oil. Main question is why does it slip when driving or putting it into drive and touch the throttle? The rear end has gone out a few times before, could it be going out again and need work? My father and I have pulled it and done the work before, just asking if that is the issue
Thanks
*edit
It also has been doing this before the seal was shot or started leaking...

I have a slightly similar issue, still havent figured it out. when i put a jumper wire in place of my ASD (pin 30 to 86 i think), the jeep start and runs fine. with the relay in the jeep wont start and the fuel pump runs constantly, but it stops when i pull the relay out. ive opened almost the entire engine harness looking for shorts but havent found anything yet. starting to think its a PCM but im not going to throw parts at it.Originally Posted by WhyDidIBuyAJeep

If this diff is going out repeatedly then it was rebuilt incorrectly or you preload/pinion depth is off or something, they dont just fail for no reason. does it have a d44? not very familiar with them but does it have clutch packs for lsd? if it does, did you put friction modifier in?Originally Posted by Titan Greer

Old fart with a wrench
If it IS a D44a, the case must be spread to preload the carrier bearings. This is often overlooked when rebuilt by someone who's never done one before. You may want to swap a Ford Explorer 8.8 axle into your ZJ. Artec Industries makes a complete bracket kit for this.

May be a stupid question but, will an XJ bumper work on a ZJ? I have the chance to buy a decent bumper off an XJ for $100 so if I can make it work itd be a deal.

I fixed this problem in mine, just yesterday. As was stated, other sockets can mess up the lighter socket. Easy fix: In the lighter socket, to the rear of it, on the right side, there's a little tab. Get it with your fingernail and pull it a little toward the center of the lighter socket. If you pull it too far, the lighter won't depress. Work with it. You'll find the sweet spot that allows your lighter to work properly, again. Good luck!Originally Posted by defeojack1

I'm almost positive that the ZJ bumper mounts differently, but worst case scenario, you can probably just cut the brackets off the XJ and weld on a set for a ZJOriginally Posted by JSJJ388

Such as these.....

So then you're only in to that bumper for 165-ish bucks.

Don't know if this has already been answered or not, but I have a 93 ZJ that had a terrible knocking when the engine was cold, but went away, once things were warmed up. This was the case when I first bought it. The #1 piston was completely cracked, and the cylinder wall felt like a washboard. My mechanic sent it out to be re-machined, put in a new piston, and everything's been great.Originally Posted by JSJJ388
Ok yall, I didnt find anything in the search that seemed to fit my issue. Ever since i got my jeep (94 ZJ limited 4.0) I have had to constant problems. The alarm and a very loud knock. I believe the knock is coming from the top end but not sure with all the extra noise. It speeds up with the engine and does not get quieter as it warms up. I tried seafoam and some others with no luck. Just changed my oil and went with a heavy oil to see if that helped. It didnt. if anything it got worse. As for the alarm, I have tried almost everything and it still sometimes goes off. I have grounded every purple/yellow wire I can find and removed the small relay in the glovebox and it still went off when my battery died. I really dont want to take the dash apart for the vtss box. Any help is appreciated.

Okay: Here's my main problem. When I start my 93, it cranks and cranks. I turn the key off, and then try again, and it usually starts, at this point. Sometimes, it's a good, strong start, and other times, it's a weak start, and then the engine sputters and surges for a moment, before it settles down. Other than that, it runs like a top. The starting issue has me scratching my head, though.
