Hi, the voltmeter instrument shows zero -0- and the check engine lamp is lit. But the engine starts and everything works normal. Shouldnt the voltmeter show battery voltage if the generator is dead? Could it be some fuse or relay problem or loose wire?

I removed my alterantor today (its a Denso) and i had to open it to take a look, the brushes at the back is worn out. Would that be the error code 41 ?? I have ordered a new Denso, but since the old one looks ok and feels ok, should i buy new brush and fix it?
One last question, if the battery is bad and have been bad over some time, would that make the brushes worn out faster than normal?

SInce you have already pulled the old one and are waiting for a new one .....
Instead of digging around inside the old one, take it somewhere that can bench test it to make certain it is dead.
I took my 98 ZJ to three shops so get the Batt/Alt/Charging system tested.
All three hooked a machine to the battery and ran tests.
All three said " Low Output From Alternator "
So I went ahead and installed a new one.
Next day I had the same damn problem come back.
Sooooooo I did some checking on my own.
After I installed NEW TERMINALS on the Battery Cables all of my problems vanished.
EDIT: I had the pulled alternator tested and it now sits on the shelf as a WORKING SPARE

OKAY! What's your voltmeter read?
As we used to say in the old days, "There is nothing like the sound of a motor firing up on a new set of plugs!"
