Default Fan Relay on 2004 Grand Cherokee

Can someone familiar with an '04 Grand Cherokee let me know their experience with the fan relay location? I've seen differing locations online (one behind the headlight, the other in the power distribution center). From what I gather online, 2004 was around the time that the location changed. So I came here to the Cherokee Forums to see if someone has experience with this!

My question is, is there an easy way to tell? In other words, if there are high and low speed fan relays in the power distribution center, does that mean there is no PWM fan relay behind the bumper/headlight?

For the background, my GC started overheating at idle. When I drive the temperature is in the normal range, but as soon as I stop driving the gauge starts rising. The fan turns freely so I don't think the fan motor is seized up but I'd like to try the logical fixes and save a buck if possible.

Thanks in advance!

Thanks for that...do you have the exact name of the relay? When I look at Advance Auto or O'Reilly online and search for fan relay, it gives me the parts for the behind the headlight relay, even though I entered my vehicle info.

Just unplug one of the relays (they are both the same) and take it to the parts house and let them match it up. It is just a generic relay. One relay is for low speed and the other is high speed....try switching them to see if fan comes on.

Sorry for the multiple replies. I'm at work so I can't take a look until I get out but I just thought of this...

If there are two relays, do they work independently? Even if one is defective shouldn't the other (high or low) kick on either way? In other words should the fan come on if one relay is inoperative?

I'm just trying to troubleshoot what I can before I have to spend a lot of money.

I think I saw somewhere that the high speed should also come on anytime the a/c is on. Can someone confirm that?

Not correct. High speed fan is controlled by pressure switch located in refrigerant line at condenser....it does not run continuously when AC is on. It cycles on/off when AC high pressure demands it.

I had this issue with the relays, I went to a mechanical fan off a Ford explorer, but it has to be the eleven blade fan so it fits into your fan shroud. It was a 4.0 liter ford explorer between 1998 and 2004. My Cherokee has ran at least 8 to 10 degrees cooler ever since.

Default 91 engine into an 89 xj

Anyone ever swap a 91 4.0 into an 89 xj? I’ve been researching. Info is a little all over the place. Can’t find this specific swap. Missing it by a year or two. Looking for a write up. Or what changes need to made.
Maybe their a direct swap?
Thanks.

dont know where to ask this so im trying here, i tried a new thread and that got nothing but related to this thread so here goes:

I have a 2 door 96 XJ body with the engine bottom from a 97 XJ and the head from a 94 grand cherokee. Everything seemed to be working fine until the water pump went out on the freeway and by the time I noticed it over heating it was at 302 degrees F and started to loose power fast. I cut it off and coated to the side and with the help of some strangers got it off the freeway to safely in a parking lot then AAA got her home to assses the damages. what i found was #2 piston melted a hole down one side. besides a lot of burnt up oil baked on everything, all else seems to be ok. My 94 short block had #1 piston skirt and connecting rod break down and blew a hole out the side of the block and the pan but I still have the everything else which is why I used the head on the cheep 97 short block I got off of craigslist. My question is can I use a good piston from my 94 grand cherokee in my 97 XJ short block?
