Unhappy Electrical Gremlins! HELP!

I have a 95 Grand Cherokee Ltd. Traded for my 96 after my son wrecked it and we regrettably had it rebuilt by an idiot. Anyway, I have some electrical issues that I hope someone can help me with. For some reason, only the left door speaker stopped working. The speaker is not blown. The Infinity CD stereo works intermittantly. Sometimes it will play without the digital display, sometimes it won't. Changed out the radio and found that wasn't the problem. The power antenna will go up when it feels like it. The digital message center by the shifter will reset to Jan 1. The instrument cluster is not working, except that the speedo needle gets jumpy from time to time. The power door locks only lock and do not unlock unless you do so manually. The turn signals work when they want to. Sometimes, if you bash the dash by the radio, they work, sometimes, not.

I tried Roland Finston, but he had no information on Jeeps in the 90's.

So my question is, where do I start looking to fix this issue? The truck is in pieces and my husband wants to get it fixed before he installs his Sirius radio. Email me at hazeleyedbeauty1967@yahoo.com.

Thanks,
Cheryl

Start by checking the ground straps that connect to engine block to the body. You said you had the engine rebuilt, and it sounds like the job was done by a hack. I would be willing to bet this hack left some ground straps off.

Default UPDATE-Electrical Gremlins-here we go again!

Well, I think I found the problem, but I think I made it worse.

I found that the electrical harness that is in the driver's door frame covered by a rubber boot and runs into the door had broken wires. It also looks like someone has already repaired it.

So my son(he soldered the short bits of wire) and I followed the wiring and thought we had it right, but now the windows do not work at all! They worked before all this.

Has anyone had to rewire this harness and if so, can you walk me through it or send me information as to what wire goes to what? If you have something I can see, that would be great.

I already set a parts search in motion for a new harness because I know if I go to Chrysler, I will have to give them an organ or two and I kinda need what I have.

I would not have started this project, but my husband was driving me crazy because his speaker wasn't working and he wanted to install a new radio. Now he has no windows and we live in FLORIDA and his air conditioner does not work either. That will teach him for bugging me!

Any HELP appreciated to get this fixed and make hubby happy. PLEASE!!Cheryl~~ hazeleyedbeauty1967@yahoo.com

Welcome to CF!

Finding a new harness from Mopar for a 20 year old vehicle is like finding a unicorn. Your best bet is a wrecking yard, IF you can find one that old in one, OR someone who is parting out a '95. You can also remove the bad section, unwrap it, and repair it yourself. Most of the circuit diagrams I've seen are very hard to read unless you're an engineer so there isn't much help there. Have you checked all the fuses? I think in the '95, it's behind the glove box or in the passenger's kick panel. The interior panel is for everything that is hot when the key is turned, for the most part.

Is your '96 still available for parts?

I am lucky to have a few junkyards near me so I know where to look.
I traded the 96 for the 95, so no, I no longer have it.
I checked all the fuses, found one blown, fixed it, did not fix the problem. Even replaced the 30 amp circuit breaker just in case. Nope.
There are two wires broken inside the housing I'm guessing are not making contact that may be the culprit, hence the search for a better housing.

I have searched and found the impossible before, and I love a challenge.

Thanks. Cheryl

Default Update on the Update on the Electrical Gremlins

So I got the new harness after going to the second junkyard. That "unicorn" didn't hide good enough from me! Anyway, this part was in better shape, but the black wire and pink wire casings were broken. A few pieces of electrical tape and the windows worked. My husband also reported that his speedometer is now working again! Hmmm... ooook
I got the radio(changed it out to another stock radio, I think the other one had issues) and speakers to work too, but the power door locks still aren't working correctly. I hear the whirring, but I see no motion on the doors.

I want to rebuild the old harness, but some of the wiring is so bad that it would have to be repaired from inside the connections inside the harness. I want to have it as a backup. Has anyone rebuilt one of these fully and if so, can you send me a diagram and specific instructions on how to do it?

The truck is worth keeping as we just rebuilt the engine and the body's in very good shape. I wouldn't go to these lengths if it wasn't.

Thanks,
Cheryl

Okay, IDK if you 95 is the same as my 00, but the door lock actuators are built into the latch mechanisms and don't have a lot of pulling power. Just a little rust on the locking linkage stops them moving. I just had to replace both rear door latches because of rust in the linkage to the door handles. $6 at Pick&Pull, $157.95 each at the dealer. The ones I pulled had a little rust, but PB Blaster and Hoppe's gun oil took care of them.

The thing I don't like about the later years is there is a Window Control Module in the driver's door that actually controls the system. I have a lock-out switch that allows the windows to not open if the switch is set, except for the driver's window. Newer models have a setting that won't allow the doors to open until the trans is in park.

I'm sorry, but I like to control my own life, not have my vehicle control me!
