Default ehaust smell in vehicle

I am puzzled on why I have a strong exhaust smell in the cab of my 1995 jeep grand Cherokee 5.2 limited, but it is only when the windows are down that I get the smell of the exhaust. this is what I have done so far I replaced the manifold gaskets and torqued the bolts to spec I also replaced the intake gasket and patched a hole in the fire wall and I checked the manifolds for cracks and I tightened the donut connectors that connect the manifolds to the main exhaust, but I m puzzled because the smell is still there and its only when the widows are down I am thinking when the windows are down it creates a draft from inside the engine compartment the smell seems to be coming from the window/top dash are. If any one can help me I would appreciate it deeply, it would be nice to roll my windows down and enjoy the weather. also some one said it could be my EGR valve bleeding of the gasses?

It's not the EGR valve. What does the rest of the system look like? Any holes? Does the exhaust exit at the rear of the Jeep, or did you hack it off before the rear axle? Are you sure it's exhaust and not an oil leak burning off that you're smelling?

see I blew my motor about 2 months ago due to some deep water skipping, but ever since I had the jeep its always smell that way, but when I did the engine swap I made sure the whole system was not rotted, I checked for cracks and holes. but nothing was present I even went as far as crawling under to feel for exhaust leaks. now I did cut the catalytic converter off due to it being rotted out then I replace the muffler with a flowmaster 44 and welded the pipes all together, the exhaust comes out behind the rear tire like normal that's all I did for exhaust work. the smell is exhaust not burning oil I know the difference plus I made sure when I rebuilt the engine to place all the gaskets especially the valve covers, now I am stuck, its not a big deal but I would enjoy having the window down without the smell.

Put the catalytic converter back on.

When any window is open, you get reduced air pressure in the car that will suck in anything that's outside. A leaky liftgate gasket it the most common one, but you can look for holes in the floor from rust or missing access plates. They used to have problems with station wagons with tailpipes coming straight out the back and they had to fit pipes that exited out the side behind the rear tire. A jeep with rust holes in the liftgate is a bad thing.

No catalytic converter and a hole big enough to put your hand through? And you don't know why you're smelling exhaust in the cabin? Did you eat a lot of paint chips when you were a kid?

Good old Busted. Always at the cutting edge of satire! He's right, though. I had a smell in my 97 ZJ and looked for the reason of quite a while until I found a hole in the floor under the pass rear seat. Also, I was running a muffler with no tailpipe, just a downspout. After I fixed the hole and put on a tailpipe, no more smell.
