Charged battery then difficulty starting
This morning the battery was stone flat so I recharged it - 4 hours later when it was charged the engine turned ok but wouldn't start.
Eventually I sat inside and pressed the throttle halfway, it started but cut out after I released the throttle. The bonnet / hood had been open in the pouring rain and the engine was soaking wet, sprayed all the connections with good old WD40 and its now running okay
Could it just be the fact that the engine was soaking or something more serious?.
The battery has been on the way out since I bought the Jeep a few months ago, so I have ordered a top range BOSCH battery with a 4 year gt as winter is approaching.

Sounds like you solved you own problem. I would check on battery drain with the engine off, could be you've got something pulling the charge out of the battery. Suspects are numerous, one in particular is a bad diode in the alternator.
And another thing. Remember WD40 is flammable! I had some plug wires shorting out and sprayed them with the engine running. The whole thing went up in flames! I had to throw a lot of snow on it to put it out and then it wouldn't start because it was wet. I dodged the bullet on that one.
Just one of those thing you never forget.

I fitted the new BOSCH battery and the engine is back to normal again
When I fitted it the engine was warm and when I was attaching the clamp I found one of the water pipes - about 3" from the battery was extremely hot surely this can't be good for the battery ?

If the battery is dead and the ECU is reset, when pressing the throttle at first start, wouldnt the ECU get totaly wrong readings from the TPS and acts that way? I did have a bad TPS, but the car did run almost okey, a litle high idle. But after reseting the ECU the engine was totaly crazy since the ECU had learned to "live" with the bad TPS. New TPS and everything was okey and normal idle.

That water pipe might be the Air conditioner high pressure line and it will be hot after running. Your AC runs in defrost as well.
