Default Can't fill the fuel tank on 2004 Grand overland

Since i have gotten this jeep it has had an issue filling the tank and wanting to shut the pump off after a few seconds unless i pump it at a trickle which takes forever. Oddly enough if the weather is just right it seems its not as big of an ordeal but that is very rarely the case and it will still shut off a few times and i can't use the highest flow setting on the handle.. i did pull the rear bumper cover and disconnected the hoses that I thought were for venting and blew air throug them. Fuel fill hose does not appear kinked. Any suggestions?

The only place for air to get out while filling the tank is through the filler pipe and air vent pipe that is welded into the side of it. If you shove the pump nozzle in all the way in to the spring, it may cut off the air exiting around the anti-syphon valve, Have you tried pulling the nozzle out a little bit when filling? That way the nozzle is against the side of the filler pipe and creates less splash. I've noticed different stations have different fuel flow rates, some faster than others. You could try a different station than the one you normally use.

I had that with my 97 XJ. Same station everytime, same pump. So i pulled up the next pump and tried again. Pump didnt shut off and filled just fine. Next fill up i tried the same pump that shut off. This time it didnt not shut off. Next time, it did. However, i can use the same pump that shuts off (with the XJ) when filling the Mustang no problem. Ever. Weird. On newer vehicles that use a capless fuel filler, i have heard of this happening quite a bit. My mom has that every now and then with her 2018 Grand. Doesnt matter which station she uses, but its not everytime it shuts off. My bosses Equinox is capless, but he has never had a pump shut off.

Its one of lifes mysteries.

I have tried about every position/angle in the fill tube that is possible it makes no difference. I also have this problem at every gas station i have been to so its not tied to one pump in particular.

Googled a bit and, for other vehicles atleast, a restricted EVAP can cause the pump to shut off. The air in the system needs a way out, but cant, so the pressure builds up and the pump assumes the tank is full when it isnt.

well i think i figured it out. I tore into vapor recovery/vent arear that is under my bumper, broke a part (damn bear paws), and found a old bad fix that someone made with a heater hose that pnched closed. It seems to work now. I filled my tank on my way to work (granted it only took 3.5 gallons to top it off) with the pump on the highest setting and it didn't shut off sooooooooooooooo

D'oh! I forgot the vapor canister is in the back on the late model WJ's. Stupid place to put it anyway. My 2000 has it next to the brake booster. Glad you found it.

thanks. Did a 3/4 tank fill today and worked at full blast no issues so it appears to be fixed. I did have to tear back into it before i filled though as my hose slipped off the vapor can yesterday on the Glade Top Trail and made it smell like gas but all is fixed now
