If it were me I'd replace it while doing the evap coil. Cheap insurance against a future failure. JMO
Hello all,
Just joined this forum after reading through much of this thread yesterday. I have a 2007 WK and believe my evaporator core is leaking (it's blowing mist through the vents every morning and ceasing to cool in the afternoon). I live in Southeast Louisiana w/ three young ones including an infant and this is a problem! First shop I took it to quoted me "at least a couple grand". I'd rather spend the $150-200 on the part and the better part of a weekend to get it done.
Anyway, I haven't seen any info on the 07's in this thread. Anybody done one?
Ol' Blue : I see you are faithfully sending out help when you can. Do you have any info for an '07 WK evaporator core replacement. I would be very appreciative!
Thanks for the great source of info. Looks like I'll be needing this forum quite a bit from now on
I own a CJ so I know how this Jeep stuff goes

I found this link to what was said to be a FREE Repair Manual (I assume it's a Factory Service Manual in pdf form). >-> http://www.tradebit.com/visit.php/225718/product/-/166892318
It came from here:
Thanks for the reply, Ol' Blue. Think I'm going to go ahead and buy the manual to save me some headaches in dealing with that dash. I saw that "cheat" video but am wondering if the evaporator core requires full dash removal while with the heater core only it's unnecessary (?).
This video seems pretty helpful for anyone out there attempting the dash removal on a WK :
Again, thanks Ol' Blue for your help.

Sorry Chad, I thought that was free.
Anytime I've ever looked at any Jeep XJ, ZJ, or WJ manuals, they show the evap coil and heater core are both in the same HVAC housing. I doubt it would be any different in the WK.

Cutting to the chase...just had Dealer do it on a '97 GC. Had water on the floor (no, not due to drain). Did the evap anyway due to labor to do it later if needed. Jeep Dealer = $900 to take out/re-install dash (+$300 for Evap).

Wow...that's still cheaper than a lot have reported. At least you have a guarantee if something goes wrong.
Just thought I would share my experience on this thread since I had a leaky evaporator.
I researched this for many, many hours studying the write ups, looking at parts and refilling my freon with dye two separate times at a very respected local shop.
Long story short, I had a leak in the evaporator as suspected and each time I filled with freon, the AC would stop working in about two weeks after being filled.
I worked this summer with a HVAC company, not specializing in automotive, but still the use of freon and repairing leaks was sort of similar.
Anyway, disregarding most of the guru's that said DO NOT use the leak repair in a can stuff, I said WTF and bought this.. http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/web...content=value4
and also a can of R134 to fill er up.
This was in late April... As of August 22nd my AC still blows ICE cold and the total cost of repair was around $40. I didn't even ad the exact amount of freon this time, just put the whole can of R134 and checked the pressure was in the green zone on the cheapo gauge.
What can I say, went the expensive way twice refilling with exact amount and using the dye which cost me over $200 and still didn't fix the leak. Thought about the tedious long day of taking dash out, evaporator core apart, new parts, probably heater core while I was in there, and refilling plus coolant too....
At least $400 in parts and fluids
Went the cheap way, $40 and am very happy for now. Even if it just does last me the rest of the summer, I am glad I did not have to do it the right way!

Oh well, at least you now have your AC working, for cheap.
