Hi, ol"blue. My '98 Cherokee (XJ) 4.0l automatic has a bad evaporator leak. I would appreciate if you could send the information you've become "famous" for to me. I used to do residential and commercial HVAC work, so I at least know something of what to do, but have had little experience with automobile systems.

I also have a more general question about the accumulator/drier. Back in the old days, when we knew a system was clean and had low operating hours, we would sometimes leave a vacuum pump on overnight to dry out the desiccant instead of changing the part. Does anyone know of a reason not to do this on an automotive system? This, of course, assumes that you know the system is clean and the filter is also likely to be reasonably clean.

Thank you everyone for any information!

Ken

For the 92 ZJ:
After I had the dash assy loose, I used a ratchet tie down strap and pulled it at an angle towards the drivers seat. Did not remove any of the seats. There was more than enough room to get the cooling box out. Another thing I did was on the heater core, I cut the water pump line near the distributor, and the other line was already cut at the valve cover. Left those 2 lines on the heater core. It was very easy to reconnect them this way, instead of fighting both back onto the heater core nipples.

Biggest issue I had was none of the instruction had all the bolts that needed to be removed to get the "dash" out!
For the record:
Passenger side above the wiring harness, faces east
Just to the left of center, 2 bolts, both face east, near the VIC
Over top of the steering column faces straight up
To the left of the steering column, near the door, accessed under the front trim panel faces north.
4 nuts along the top of the dash, easy to spot.

You will need to lift up and out, as the VIC bracket that you took the 2 bolts out of extends up, so that the dash nestles into it.

Now that I have had a good nights sleep, I will still, never ever do this job again!

Ol' Blue. I'm too in need of an evaporator core replacement. Mine's a 98 Sport with the 4.0l, automatic. I can't believe I already have nearly $500 in the AC system and still don't have cold air. I have to do this evaporator replacement to have any benefit from my investment. sucks.

Thank you in advance, Sir.

Evap Replacement in my 1997 ZJ
Hello to all,

I have a 1997 Grand Cherokee Limited (with ATC) that I was fortunate enough to buy new. I love it and will keep it forever. Unfortunately, the AC looses its charge in about 1 month and the local Jeep dealer said it is a bad evaporator; $1200 to replace it.

Of course, I want to do the job myself. Partly to save some money but mainly because I want the job done right. After reading the 500 posts in this thread and thinking about what is involved to do this job, I can't imagine that the dealer will pay the needed attention to all the details. Can you imagine what the tech is thinking on Monday morning at 7:00 AM when his/her boss tells him that he has to do an evap R&R? He must be thinking it's a bad day...

I would very much appreciate the manual for this job.

Thank you very much. I will post back when I do the job to share some of the finer points of the process for others.

John.

evap replacement help
Hello everyone, I'm new to this wonderfull site and have read just about all of the posts about this topic but I'm looking for more info. I have a 2000 GC laredo, 6cyl,auto, I've been dealing with no AC for some time after realizing that the leak is in the evaporator core. I've refilled the r134 and can see a drip out of the tube on the firewall. I'm ready to fix it right, any suggestions would be very appreciated. thanks in advance. GAP
