Most repair shops evacuate the freon to a storage tank, then use a vacuum pump on the system and observe the gauges to make sure it holds a vacuum for 30 minutes.

ol'blue, I have a 2000 Cherokee Sport 4X4. Mechanic checked the AC system and said the leak was in the evaporator core. Could you send me the appropriate materials to do this job?

Default Evaporator Core on 97 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited

I have been told by a mechanic that my evaporator core in my 97 Jeep needs to be replaced. He has put freon in it 2 times in 2 weeks. After about 3 days it leaks out. He says that it shows freon leaking into the car through the vents. I was wondering if there was another way to check and make sure that the evaporator core is the problem. Someone had told me it could be the Blend Air Door. Thanks for any help!

Welcome to CF.
If it's not holding freon then you have a leak somewhere. Blend doors couldn't cause freon to leak out your vents, they only control where the air flow exits from. If freon is coming from the vents it must be a leaking evaporator core.
I'll send you a PM.

Ol Blue,

I'm getting ready to do the evap core change and I also need the heater core done too. I have the Haynes manual and I'm ready to proceed based on that alone. I figure your notes might have some additional insight. I would greatly appreciate if you would send me any helpful info. 1998 Cherokee.

I like the idea of removing the seats and swinging the dash over a dropped column instead of total removal. I might try that too. Any extra info would be helpful.

Thanks to everyone who has contributed useful info. I'll do the same if I learn something I think is helpful in the process.
