Default Bloody Blend doors... PartII

... Okay, so BRAND NEW Dealer part arrived to day and I thought get it on and see what happens...... except its done exactly the same as the old one and spun once and not moved again! It won't "actuate" when I rotate the righ hand dial for temp (UK Model).

Did the diagnostics on it and:

43 - Engine Air Intake temp bus Message Missing
48 - Right Temp door not responding (That's cause its currently disconnected - remember I'm trying to repair the blend doors.)

52- Recirc door travel range to high
54 - Left Temp Dor Travel to Large
56 - right temp door travel to large
58 - Engine Coolant Temp bus missing
59 - Vehicle speed bus message missing
60 - Engine RPM Bus Message missing
61 - OAT Bus message missing
62 - Display Intensity Bus Message Missing

Not asking an awful lot is it? Before any suggestions are made about scrapping it or breaking for spares... don't think it hasn't crossed my mind lols! But lets focus on the matter in hand... and answers to wiping this or getting my blend doors working again so that I can have heat again please?? The doors are in but I've yet to get passed the test stage and reseal..

Any help much appreciated.

did you try to reset blend doors in ZJ? i learned that it is possible, few days ago.

rest of errors seems unrelated to blend doors.

Hi and thank you for your reply... I thought I'd upset someone when no one replied on two different forums lols!

My first question is what is ZJ? If its the model, the I'm a WJ 2001 I'm afraid, worse still I'm a uk specked Mercedes Engined one.

I was carrying out the blend door repair and I'm so close to finishing until this occured. I have dual AC (Aircon) in this so both doors were done as it was working intermittently sometimes you had heat other times not - more the latter in fact. So I cut into the Heater box and all was well.. reassembled as per instructions and went to test before glueing and the actuator failed... It apeared to work initially then powered up and failed full open I tested the old one and yes it had failed open. So a new one was ordered and arrived today. It was duly fitted and did the same - at the moment my thoughts are these: The passengers door and control are working perfectly but the drivers side isn't at all and I'm thinking that the control on the panel is not working properly and yet it displays on the panel okay and runs up and down the digits fine, but its like there's no signal from the control to the actuator to support this... that my latest theory anyway. If anyone knows any different your ideas are most welcome as I'need this pronto before the snow arrives...:-(

ZJ is the previous model of GC.

i found an instructions to reset blending doors in Zj.(in a local Turkish forum) give it a try on WJ.

-engine off, air directing **** to auto.
-turn ignition, dash board illuminates, do not touch any switch or ****
-wait 1 minute and air direction **** to "off" position
-remove battery (-) terminal wait for few hours (or touch positive and negative cables to each other, when battery is not there ofcourse ) this clears all memories.
- connect battery while keeping direction **** in off position. turn of ignition.
-after connecting battery wait at least 30 minutes when doors and interrior lights are shut.
-trun the direction **** to auto again and turn ignition (do not run) adn wait for 1 minute.

calibration starts.

i hope this works...

I have a 2000 WJ which suffered the blend door failure at the beginning of last winter.
Following o’blue’s heatertreater link – you will see a video of how to effect a fix developed by enterprising persons, that avoids having to remove the complete aircon-ductwork and dash.

However I’m not sure that they do a kit for a RHD version. Having viewed the video, I decided to effect my own fix which involved cutting into the duct work (using strategically drilled holes and a junior hacksaw blade). Having removed a ‘panel’ from the ductwork, I drilled holes at appropriate locations allowing me to insert two screws each with a securing nut – fixing both blend doors in the ‘UP’ (warm air) position. And then resealing the ‘panel’ to the ductwork

Admittedly I have no control over the temperature of the air – it being set at HOT. Come last spring, I had to remove my fix, allowing the blend doors to fall, giving me cold air only. A few months ago, I once again attacked my handiwork to once again set the air to HOT.

Given that it was not worth spending thousands on the vehicle – you might consider my fix, which is better than no warmth.

The heatertreater link video also shows you how to interrogate the blend door position diagnostics, allowing you to confirm the door positions and drive them – avoiding the need for an expensive OBD device.

I you ask nicely, I’ll take a photo of my handiwork (and post it here) – showing the ‘panel’ I cut out of the ductwork allowing me to effect my fix.

sxr951 has kindly done my work for me.

Two observations: In the RHD model, the panel cut-out is a mirror image of that shown, and is to the right hand side of the glove box.

In the photo, a central inner section (wall) of the ductwork has been cut away – in my fix, this is left in place, and one of my screws which holds the inner blend door up, is fixed in this inner wall.

I removed the outer blend door motor and threw it in the bin.

Thanks sxr951 for supplying such clear photos.
