Default axle I.D.

Hello All,
I am new here and also to this Jeep I have bought. Its a 2004 Grand Cherokee Overland . It has the 4.7 HO engine and AWD . Here is what I am up against...the passenger side rear axle seal is leaking. How do I determine what axle it is . I am under the impression that the Overland has bigger axles than the other Grand Cherokees ???. I have read dana 35 in rear and 30 in front. Also read that it uses a special gear oil . Tell me all I need to know ! I sure can use the help!!!

Post up a picture of the pumpkin (from the rear). In the Grand Cherokees they're probably a D35 or a D44a ("A" stands for Aluminum center section). Neither is a great axle. With the 4.7 I think you may have the 44.

post a pict & we should be able to help you out.

Welcome to CF!

I can get you started, but I'm not an expert on the 4.7 and it's special needs. You say AWD, do you have Quadra-Trac II? That does use a special lube in the rear end, I think. Also, I believe the rear axle is a D44. Most of the 4.0 I6's came with the D35 and the V8's with the D44.

The best website I've found for your jeep is wjjeeps.com. It even has info on changing light bulbs.

I'm assuming one or more of the other guys with more knowledge will pick this up. Have a good day.
