Hey All! Haven't posted in a while since I sold my last XJ and I haven't made a whole lot of progress on the ZJ build.

Anyways!

I'm having an issue with the ZJ right now and I'm not sure if its the transmission or just exactly what. I tried searching the forum but I couldn't see anything quite like my situation. The Jeep is a 1998 Grand Cherokee Limited with the 5.2 liter V8.

There is some sort of clicking/pinging sound that sounds like it is coming from the bell housing, and it seems to correlate with the RPMs. It does it after the jeep has been parked for any amount of time. It seems to start once I begin deceleration.

It makes the sound once I near a stop and continues until acceleration, at which point it will eventually stop once I reach 2nd or 3rd gear. It sometimes seems to cause the transmisson to slip when I begin acceleration. I was thinking torque converter but not sure what would cause it to behave like this.

Any help is GREATLY appreciated!
If you need anymore info let me know!

Cracked flexplate, and or loose torque convertor bolts (check those first)

I second that! Check your bellhousing bolts. Loose bolts will cause broken flexplates.

If the noise seems to stop once you reach second gear I would think it would be in the input clutch assembly, or maybe a loose band in side the Trans mission

Thank you so much both of you! I'll be sure and check them out and let you all know if that changes anything!

Sounds intimidating...
Haven't messed with automatic transmissions much, the only ones I've ever taken apart were in high school and in my ford ranger and that was years ago. I assume that getting something like that diagnosed would require taking it to a shop?

Its not that bad. I would take it in and have a proper daig done and then go from there. I use to rebuild auto Trans, its not hard. Grab a manual and dig in.
