Default 97 Grand Cherokee won't shift out of 4 part time

1997 Grand Cherokee selec-trac 4.0. Haven't put it into 4 wheel drive since last winter. Today when I started it the light came on for 4wd part time. The selector was in 2wd position and won"t move to 2wd. Any answers? Thank You!

I think the first thing would be to inspect the linkage, bushings and adjustment underneath. Bushing may have fallen out changing the adjustment.

Here's how the factory suggests you shift the transfer case and I've been doing this since these things were new and I worked at the dealership. Quoted from the owner's manual. The suggestions in CAPS are mine.

"To engage, shift the transfer case lever from 2H to 4H while the vehicle is moving at any legal speed". I LET OFF THE GAS, THROW THE LEVER, TAP THE GAS AND LET OFF.

4L position: " To engage, slow the vehicle to 2-3 MPH , shift the transmission to Neutral, then shift the transfer lever to the right and pull firmly rearward to 4L".

TO SHIFT OUT OF 4L, SHIFT THE TRANSMISSION INTO NEUTRAL WITH THE VEHICLE STOPPED, SHIFT THE TRANSFER CASE LEVER TO 2H, THEN THE TRANS TO D IF YOU HAVE AN AUTOMATIC, OR INTO FIRST GEAR WITH A MANUAL, AND CONTINUE ON.

Hello and thanks for replying. Yes the Jeep is definitely in 4wd. It is lugging with wheel turned. Tried backing and going forward and shifting to 2wd and back again with no results.

I suppose that the bushing could have to be checked. Its just that it was normal 1 day and the next it was stuck in 4wd part time. No rough riding and definitely didn't put it into 4wd. Thanks
