Default '94 rear axle removal

Family friend owns a wrecking yard, trying to get all the parts to do the ZJ rear disc brake swap on my '97 XJ.

Got the wheels off, calipers off with soft brake lines, rotors off & thrown in the recycle pile (buying new ones)...now I still need the parking brake assembly and backing plate...

Appears I need to remove the axle to get the remaining parts off so removed the rear diff cover and drained the fluid but I'm not sure how to remove the axle...need help.

Tried to search the forum but only found one thread that's not making sense to me.

Thanks!

I know that but how do you get to them.

What I have gathered but don't think I completely understand...possibly remove some reatiner bolt (may not be on this diff), remove locking pin (not sure exactly how to do this), remove retaining pin, remove spider gears, push in axles to remove c-clips with magnet and slide out axles.

Can someone confirm this is the right way and clarify if there is a retainer bolt and how to properly get the locking pin out?

Thanks, need to get back to the yard tomorrow or the next day.

remove the small screw/bolt that holds the center pin in, then remove the cetner pin. push each axle shaft inward and remove the c clips

Ok so there is a bolt, got it. The center pin...that is the large pin that runs through the smaller gears and carrier?

Yes, and do NOT rotate the axle shafts or driveshaft with the center pin removed. It will spit the spider gears out and is kind of a PITA to get them back in and lined up.

Good to know but not a problem, everything I don't use that I take off gets thrown back into the Jeep cause its getting crushed when I'm done.

One more question I forgot to ask...is there anything on the hub side I need to take off like bolts or anything?

Funny part too is I thought the two bolts on either side of the diff holding a bracket on had to come off and I spent 15 minutes trying to get them off and gave up to go back tomorrow with a cordless impact lol

I'm not sure on Dana axles, but GM axles have friction washers under the side gears and Bustedback is right. They are a PITA to put back in. Make sure after you pull the lock pin (bolt), turn the center section slightly for clearance for removal of the cross shaft BEFORE you pull the shaft out.

Oh Wait! You don't care. All you want is the axles, right? You probably want the backing plates for the parking brake hardware also. They are bolted to the axle with either studs and nuts, or bolts and nuts. If it has bolts, there is a large hole in the axle flange for a socket.
