93 with a bad trans. Replacements??
Can I use a trans out of a XJ cherokee since it seems ZJ Grands have tran issues? I have a local junk yard that has a bunch of both but a lot of the grand cherokees have v8s while my buddies is a 4.0. So I am wondering if I can use the trans out of the Cherokee classic that is there or any XJ for that matter? I took a look at it and it has the select lever in it for part time 4wd, 2wd and 4 low. So it isn't awd model. So what are my options.

I am talking about the trans. But I have no idea if I would also need to use the transfercase dependent on what I am pulling the trans out of. So I thought it would be helpfull to let everyone know that it is not all time awd but 4wd.

Once you replace the trans you can use your current transfer case.

correct
There will be a tag on the side of the transmission above the pan with the model designation.
If it is an AW-4 update us with the manufacture date of the ZJ.. found on the drivers door.

I saw no tag on the transmission. I looked at his 91 XJ and the pan on his 93 ZJ is smaller where as the XJs pan is long. So I guess it has the other trans in it. The build date on the driver do says 6/93. I got the vin if anyone knows how to read them. 1J4G258S0PC694490.

Considering that build date and that the pan's differ in appearance i think your right to assume this has the 42re.
94 model year ZJ's started coming out late 93 so i'd assume the 6/93 production could be considered late 93. Thats why he doesnt have the AW-4.
