Default Transmission in a ZJ

Well today right after me and my fiancee went to check out an apartment which was perfect for us, my transmission blew out. I can now not move it in any gears and can hear it slipping inside.I tried looking online for a trans ID site but couldn't find anything. Mines a 97 Grand Cherokee 4.0 4x4 Automatic. Would any other Jeeps Trans fit other then Grand Cherokees or what year GC's mine would fit. Thanks in advance

Trans is a 42re. An AW4 can be installed but it's a pretty tough wiring nightmare getting it to shift other than with a manual controller. You can google that swap.

Your looking at ~1200-1400 for a rebuild.

Try to avoid buying used as they all go eventually.. usually around 150K miles. Unless you get a rebuild with documentation.

Thank you very much. Would the 5.2L have the same trans as well or is that the aw4? Thanks again

The v8's had a different trans 46re/rh, bellhousing pattern is different.

The AW4 is behind the 4.0l in the XJ... and the very early 93 ZJ with 4.0L.

Almost..

The very early 93 ZJ with the 4.0L had the AW-4 trans. Then they went to the 42re...

The AW-4 is also an overdrive trans.

Search around at www.mallcrawlin.com and you'll see threads on the AW-4 conversion. Lotsa work.. and after buying parts your close to half the rebuild cost anyway.. moreso if your labor doesnt come free.

If the Jeeps clean and in good condition it may be better for you to just drop the coin on a rebuild from a reputable shop. And as always.. shop around.

Some shops will cut you a break if you take the trans out yourself and take it in for them to rebuild. Downside is, you have to put it back in too...

Transpartsusa.com might have most of the parts you would need to rebuild, also rockauto.com carried rebuild kits too. If you are mechanically adept, you can do it yourself. I rebuilt a Ford A4LD last spring for the first time ever, and my son has already abused it in his Explorer for 8,000+ miles, close to 1000 of that in the dirt... Guess I got something right... I know when my 42RE goes, I'll consider doing it myself.

I know it's not the route most would take, but when my '97 ZJ's trans went out I took it to the dealer. For $2,400 I got a new trans & converter w/ a 3 year 36,000 mile warranty. A little high maybe but I'll have no trans worries for at least 3 years.

Flush the lines, cooler, and if possible the converter before installation. I'd want to remove as much of the old fluid as possible. JMO

X2 on the flush. There is a foaming flush for the cooler that works wonders.

Yeah I am going to flush it before I install it. i did the fluid/filter on it twice this month and the fluid would still come up black and would get graphite like material stuck to the pan. The previous owners did not take care of the car at all.
