Is your's AWD or have you modified it to be 2wd capable? (search for np231 transfer case swap/mod in a ZJ)
That seems like a weekender job and can be done totally with used parts. Might get you some better gas mileage not always turning the front axle too....and cheaper and much easier than an engine swap....just a thought

You'll be time and money ahead to just get a cheap daily driver. You might be surprised what you come up with if you get on the cars/trucks section of Craigslist and enter $1500 max price. You don't want to get rid of that 5.2, I promise you that.

14... I'm lucky to get 12 or 11.8 but again I drive 2.6 miles back and forth to work so I really can't tell what she will do on the highway.
I love my 5.2 with that nice V8 Flowmaster on it..

Even with the NP231 or 242 swap the front end is still turning. Just no power going to the axle. You would need front locking/unlocking hubs to stop the front internals from turning.
Have you done a tuneup on your 5.2 lately? I am currently getting 18mpg with winter rated gas. During the summer months I get upwards of 23-25mpg. That is mixed city and hwy driving. I still have the all time 4wheel drive NP249 tcase also.

i like the v8 but it is a dd, and the mpg's are killing me. i like the sound of the 5.2's with the flowmaster (same engine in my dodge 1500) id really like to do a 4bt cummins swap. those cummins are so bad *****

Why you're at it I think you should get rid of the MPI and go to a staged 2 barrel carb on your bakwards swap.
