So I decided to rebuild the transmission in my 95 ZJ. I have it mostly torn down but I am having a bit of an issue with some of it. Here are pics of what I am having an issue getting out of the case.

Not being there and not having had one apart myself, It's very difficult to say what's going on. Duh!

 

Well I do realize that Dave. But I figured with that many views at least one of them was a transmission guy, that would be able to give me some kind of advice.

 

I was hoping that myself. I didn't mean to put you down, it's just that I don't know **** about the 46rh and just a little about the 42re.

BUT, I know enough about GM's THM 350 to make me dangerous!

 

OK so I finally decided to take a BFH to my transmission to see if that would assist me in getting things apart. Well that did the trick for me lol. Parts started falling out of it pretty easy.
First Pic is after the sun gear and the outer shell fell out.

The next is of the sun gear and it's outer shell. Not really sure why the housing of the sun gear is chewed up when the outer shell shows no sign of grinding.

The next pic is of the intermediate shaft to the overdrive unit. Not sure if it comes out of the plate it is in or not.

The last pic is what is left of the my overrunning clutch. I am guessing at what it is from the description in the tech manual.

Oops forgot one last pic of the reverse drum (I am assuming). I am sure it is not supposed to look like that. Is it a bushing that goes in there or what?

Was wondering if anyone knew of a good spot to get replacement parts for the ones that are bad?

 

Okay, it looks to me like the snap ring for the forward clutch broke allowing the clutch plates to push up against the O/D "sprag" or over-running clutch, and destroy it. Those sprag clutches are supposed to lock up in one direction and slide free in the other.

The 46rh is hydraulically shifted were as the 42re is electronically shifted. This portion of the shifting is in the 3rd to 4th gears. (4th gear is O/D)

I hate fixing something with broken pieces. Good luck with that.

Actually I am in the process of trying to sell my 97 ZJ so I can get the money to either buy another tranny or buy the parts to fix this one.
I'm going to try a local JY tomorrow and see if they would do a trade if they have a 46RH trans. in their yard.

 

Well, on my way to fixing the broken transmission. Just found 3 of the parts I need on Ebay for $35 each. Got 2 of them coming Just have to wait to get some more cash to get the other parts

 

If I might make a suggestion; replace the torque converter and flush the trans cooler as well. You don't want any chance of getting contaminated fluid into your "new" transmission.

 

Yeah was planning on changing the torque converter. Good idea to flush cooler also

 

Don't waste your time flushing the cooler, you will never get all of the junk out of it. Just get an auxiliary cooler and mount it in front of the radiator.

 

Well finally got all the parts I needed to put this thing back together. Made some good headway on it today but ran into a slight problem.
I was putting the front clutch together with the clutches and steels that came in the rebuild kit. But all 4 would not fit in. The tech manual says it requires 4 clutches and steels. When I tore it apart it only had 3 clutches and steels and it only fits 3 clutches and steels now. I checked the clearance according to the the manual and it checks out good.
So should I leave it with 3 or try to figure out why it won't take 4?
