Yeah, it's not unusual to have clutch plates left over. As long as the clutch stack has the right clearance under the retainer, you're good to go. There should have been a plain steel spacer plate somewhere in the stack. You can get thicker or thinner spacer plates as needed to adjust the clearance.
I think in my GM 700R4 there were 7 friction plates in the first gear clutch.

Figured I'd give ya'll an update on my progress..... or lack there of. Originally I had decided to leave the overdrive unit alone because I didn't want to deal with the spring and having it pressed out and in again. Bad decision... lol
I was getting ready to mate the 2 halves together and for some odd reason the 2 splines were not aligned. I tried to realign them to no avail. So I had to pull it all apart. Good thing I did..... Pics of what I found...... lol

Wow good thing you tore it apart sheesh.
If it had gone back together it wouldn't have lived long.
Wish I could help but I know zero about the 46rh, but once yours is done, YOU are the expert and I know who to come to with all my questions lol.

LOL Zombie it has been a long road to where I'm at right now. Yes I will know about 46RH trans pretty good. But I won't be able to diagnose one from problems explained to me. As for teardown and rebuild hell yeah ask away....
Yeah Dave it is a REAL good thing I tore it apart.
All parts are ordered an on their way. Should be here tues. or wed. Figured while I was waiting for parts I would work on transfer case swap stuff. Got both cases apart today and called it a day. Should have case back together before I get parts for tranny

Has the valve body been disassembled and cleaned too?
This Sonnax Sure Cure Kit is a very nice upgrade for the valve body. There are some decent prices for this kit on eBay.
They also detail vacuum tests for the valve body to ensure proper operation.

What was done about the special tools listed in the FSM?
For example, the Adapter Tool SP-5124 and the Press Plate SP-3701 are both listed for the overrunning clutch cam replacement. Also, the overdrive work requires the Compressor Tool 6227-1 and an 800 pound ram w/ 6" of travel.

Ehhhh I handled all of that pretty easy. But when I got it all put back together the input and output shafts wouldn't turn. So I figured something was too tight. took it to a friend that was going to take it to his tranny guy to look at it and ended up buying a rebuilt tranny out of a '94 Dodge Ram for $100.
