Default 46RH Interchange?

Hi all,

New to the forum. I recently purchased a 93 Grand Cherokee with the 5.2l and 46RH transmission. I purchased it knowing that the transmission would be bad, but not realizing that this conbination was a three year run.

I am pretty handy overall and a little work doesn't bother me. So what I am wondering is if there are other Chrysler products from the same era that could fit into the ZJ with minimal changes overall? Maybe a tailpiece change or torque converter changes, etc? Or do I need to be patient and locate a working 93-95 ZJ?

TIA

First a question. Are you sure you have a 46RH tranny. The 5.2L came with a 42RE tranny. If you have that tranny, it is the one that came behind the 5.9L. If you have the 5.2L and the 46RH tranny, then you already have the substitution

No, he's right. the 93-95 ZJ 5.2 came with the 46RH. 96-98 5.2 had the 44RE. The 5.9 used the 46RE. The RH transmissions are hydraulically shifted. The RE are electronically shifted with a lock-up converter. It looks like it's time to rebuild the one you've got.

Unfortunately that's a no go. The Jeep had lost the front drive shaft and it took a good chunk out of the bell housing. So I really need to locate at least a good core 46RH to rebuild. If all else fails I might still consider it, but it's pretty far down on my list.

The problem with using an RE trans is you need a TCM that will work with whatever PCM you've got onboard.

I really am not interested in moving over the RE series. Mainly I was hoping to find out if the 46RH series transmissions used in the Dodge trucks might be compatible with a tailpiece change or if I locate one out of a Truck 4WD would it be a direct fit. That opens up my options greatly. Locally it seems that I am finding one V8 ZJ out of ten in the year ranges I need, with the others being the 6 cyl. But if I can also use a Dodge specific trans, then I might have more options. My main concerns is that there could be difference in bolt patterns between the Jeep and the Dodge 5.2l, or that there are brand specific internals that I can't change over. If nothing else, if the bellhousing isn't any different I might be more willing to take the chance and find out myself if such an interchange is possible.

Anyone happen to know if the 5.2l in Jeeps of the era shared the same bellhousing pattern as the 5.2l Dodge?

The starter is on the passenger side on the Jeep. The Dodge might be on the driver side.

I believe you're right. Thanks for that. It definitely is something to think about.
