2008 grand, no 4x4 on taigate.
Im going to look at a 2008 Grand tomorrow. Its very cheap. Its being traded in at a dealer and I know them so Im getting it for wholesale, $2500. I got pics and suddenly noticed that there is no 4x4 badge on the tailgate by the laredo badge. Does that mean its not 4 wheel drive or all wheel drive? They make 2wd grands in 2008? Looking to retire the xj but if its not 4x4 I dont want it. Lots of snow the last few winters. If there is no 4x4 badge on the back does that mean its 2wd?

Old fart with a wrench
The only place my 2000 WJ 4x4 Laredo is badged is a small badge below the side windows and just forward of the tail light. The 2wd jeeps are becoming more popular because of the Jeep mystique and not for the 4wd. I remember Chevy Blazer was popular and came in 2wd. Also, the Ford Explorer and Hyundai Santa-Fe.
The funny part is my company bought a Blazer because they wanted something to pick up executives at the airport in the snow, but bought a 2wd! Useless, because I drove it on occasion! I picked up 2 suits from the home office in San Francisco in a snowstorm and they were upset with the way the truck handled, but being only the driver, I kept my opinions to my self! I did, however, give the transportation manager a piece of my mind! The best part was they sold it the following summer and replaced it with a 4x4.
Your going to have to look at the console to tell, but from the price, I'd guess it's 2wd.

Thanks for the quick response. I know I'll find out tomorrow but it will drive me nuts all night not knowing. LOL. So,if its 2wd, its basically a chrysler 300 with a suv body?

Looking at the console may not help. It is probably a 3.7 V-6 and they came either 2WD or 4WD but the 4WD system used with the V-6 did not have the small chrome lever to control the transfer case. It was basically an AWD system. Only way to tell for sure is poke your head under the rig and look for a front differential and driveshaft.

Well, I checked it out today and it is in fact, 4wd. Its a 3.7 with the all wheel drive. Its clean, runs nice, brand new tires, 190k Highway miles. $2500. I pick it up this week. What it needs. Muffler at some point. the huge muffler is perforated towards the one end. Its not too loud though. The ac does not work. The compressor runs but sounds like its got marbles in it when engaged. Its a winter vehicle so no big deal. Tiny stone chip in windshield, drivers side mirror cracked glass. Interior is decent, cloth, needs a good cleaning. Its black, not my cup of tea but its ok. Its missing the removable bottom part of the front bumper. It comes off for off road clearance? Well its gone. It drives nice, has the uconnect radio. Doors are a bit squeaky, hinges need grease. I was surprised how as soon as I drove it I could tell it was a jeep. Not that much different than my xj actually. It needs a good detailing and Ill be happy. Picking it up this week. Ill post pics when I do. The mileage does not bother me. I only drive 2 miles back and forth to work and around town. I average 4000 miles a year.It should be fine.

The AC is going to engage when the defrost is on, so unfortunately that might be a bigger problem than you want it to be. If you want to avoid the compressor locking up you may want to pull the fuse for the A/C Clutch.
