2004 WJ turns left good but turning right is near impossible. Trying to make a right hand turn is worse than having no power steering at all. Obviously something must be bent but not sure where to start.

 

If you have no idea where to start then you need to take it to an alignment shop and have them to check it out, they will find the problem.

 

Ok,I put it up on jack stands and it turns left and right equally easy.. When I take it off of the stands it goes back to the problem.

 

There may be a problem with the servo inside the steering box. Like Fred said, it's best to take it to someone who can figure it out.

 

Sorry but I thought this forum would be a great source for like minded people who want to repair their car themselves.

 

If you move the steering wheel from left to right is there any clonking or knocking sound ?
Could be a track rod end either worn or seizing up ?
Track rod end is UK speak for a tie rod end :-)

 

It is, but If I'm not sure, I'm not going to tell you it's something that I'm not sure of! Steering is a life threatening thing if something's wrong. You wouldn't be happy if it froze up at 65 mph, would you? Take it apart yourself and see if something's broken! Apparently it makes enough force in one direction, but not in the other. If nothing's bent or broken in the linkage, get a rebuilt steering box.

I'm not there! I can't see it! How am I supposed to know what's wrong with it. Give me a break! Post some pics of the entire linkage system, steering box, damper, and ball joints. That might help.

Does not make any noises and with front end off of the ground,running and not running,it turns both ways equally easy.

 

My friend when you say that you have no idea where to start tells me that this problem is serious and complex, and you didn't have a clue. I gave you my best advice in taking it to a shop and have them find it, then if it is something you can fix do it yourself. If not have it repaired wherever you wish.


You were asking a lot of us with zero information given to help, if the same thing happened to mine to the shop is where it would go.


BTW fill out your Used CP so others can help you more knowing exactly what you have.

 

it's a bad steering box sector shaft clearance.....there , feel better.


No, seriously take it to a shop and have them give you an estimate, if you feel comfortable doing it yourself, them buy the parts and needed tools and have at it.
