Default 2002 Laredo 4 x 4 possible transmission issue

Hi guys she has 200,000 miles and I bought it from a buddy of mine for $350. It’s not registered in my name yet it’s been sitting in my driveway it originally had a an exhaust leak got that fixed she starts right up and she drives really good I’ve had it in my driveway for about a month and lately I have been noticing that there is hard shifting and sometimes reverse won’t engage. Today when I backed it out of my driveway I put it in drive and the jeep died I put it in park and started it and put it back in drive and it drove. Like I said it drives great while I’m driving it and it has a nice idol if any of you guys can give me any suggestions or advice on what to do that would be great thank you in advance cheers

Let it warm up in neutral for a minute or 2 before you put it in drive or reverse on the first start of the day. The o-rings are probably getting a bit hard and need time to warm up and seal. 200K on a 42re is a lot without troubles and she's probably tired. A little loving kindness is in order.

hey thanks for the response so so far what I have done is a pumped out about a quart of the existing transmission fluid and replaced it with the Lucas oil transmission fix the reason I did this in the first place was because I noticed foam on the dipstick when I first got it so I thought that maybe it was overfilled

Like I said it sits in my driveway and I don’t drive it that much if at all are usually start it every couple of days and let it idle for about 15 to 20 minutes to keep the seals and all that lubricated

One thing about that transmission you may not know. The fluid level should be checked in neutral, not park. The reason for that is the torque converter isn't pressurized in park and the level will be about a quart high if checked in park. I believe the dipstick is marked to check it idling in neutral when hot. Also there is no flow thru the cooler in park. I've been told the reason for that is most of the heat in an automatic transmission is generated in the torque converter by the pumping action and slippage of the fluid so long periods of idling will overheat it if it's pressurized and doing nothing. At least that's the theory.

So I check the transmission fluid in neutral after driving around my neighborhood and noticed that there was no fluid showing up on the dipstick and I put in what fluid that I had in my garage I will check on it in a couple of days and see if there’s any difference but I never thought that you would have to check transmission fluid in neutral I always thought you had to do it in park while it was running

Only AFT4 should be in that transmission!

Yeah, one quart low and they act funny, like not shifting right or slipping. Personally, I wouldn't use any additives in a transmission, but that's me. Using anything but ATF+4 in a Chrysler transmission can cause clutch chatter and improper shifting. New Process says Dex/Merc is best for the transfer case, but Chrysler likes ATF+4 in them also, except for the NP249 or NP247 which take a special lube. Probably the newer electric shift ones are special too.
