2000 WJ won't start~sometimes
2000 GC WJ w/168K. Just bought it yesterday and several times already it doesn't want to start. No engine turnover . . . nuttin'! Electrical all seems to work. Radio, CD, dash lights. Then if I wiggle the key aggressively in start position it will eventually start. BUT! It doesn't do it every time. I just went out and it started fine twice. So . . . whaaaats goin on.
Is it the battery in the key (has a chip), ignition switch, or what. Anything I can do to isolate problem and correct it?

There's no battery in the key. It's an RFD chip that transmits a code when queried by the SKIM (Security Key Identification Module). If the Skim doesn't recognize the key as being valid, you can crank it up but it will only run for about 1 second. An icon on the dash will light up, a picture of a key with a circle around it and a slash thru it. That should light up when you first turn the ignition on, then go out after the bulb test sequence.
I suspect a problem with the ignition switch itself. That can be replaced without changing the SKIM or the key tumbler.
Check out wjjeeps.com for a bunch of good stuff about your WJ.

My WJ has a no-crank situation about once a week. I suspect culprit is either the 'shift interlock' which connects shift-lever and ignition key cylinder. Or something like a neutral safety switch, that only allows vehicle to start in Park and Neutral.
All I have to do to remedy is bump shifter forward while in park position.

Also, I made sure shifter was in park . . . and did try and start it in neutral. Didn't improve anything.
Yeah and thanks . . . I too suspect ignition switch and will address that today.

So... update! Apparently it was the Ignition Lock Cylinder. (Key thing-a-ma-jigger) . . . took it out, removed all the tumblers and polished with 400 grit wet/dry, cleaned with brake cleaner, lubed, and put it back in. BAM! Fired off first and all subsequent times. WHEW.

I hope you lubed it with dry graphite. If you used a liquid lube, it will get sticky in winter weather.

WRONG AGAIN. Problem still exist. But definitely something in the steering column because I can get it to start by moving the tilt up, or down while key is in start position.
Has some same symptoms as a faulty Ignition switch Actuator Pin.

After a week of researching, digging, head scratching . . . and pulling all the covers off the steering column/dash (wanted to change some bulbs anyway), here's an update:
In looking for some switch to remove and replace, I came across a harness connector back in there and took it apart, dowsed it with contact cleaner, reconnected it, and it has started each and every time since!!! Under the heading of WTF??!! (mu appologies)
So . . . dirty contacts in connector (maybe). When it has started for a few months to a year . . . I will start to believe. Thanking you for all your help . . . Keep on DIGGIN'
