Default 1997 ABS light stays on

Just bought this '97 JGC and wondering what would cause the ABS light to remain on after startup.
Has anyone had this problem with theirs?
Checked the fuses and the ABS wiring but thinking to start taking the wheels off to check the sensors and then replacing the ABS relay. Any help would be appreciated.

I checked the fuses (all ok), not sure about the relay but this weekend will be checking the entire ABS system to make sure it's clean. Didn't know if someone could pin-point a quick fix but then again not every light can be the same issue for everyone.

Hows your tire wear? If your abs system detects a wheel spinning faster(due to wear) the light will turn on

Thanks x91j. I'll check that out too.

Tires are new, same size, similar tread but front tires are different brand.

Got this '97 JGC on Sat and this ABS light is the #1 issue that needs to be addressed. Other issues are minor(dash lights flicker, pw dr locks only work off arm power, CD player not working) and can wait.
Great site by the way.

There is a diode in the ABS wiring, in the dash, that will trigger the ABS light if it burns out.

Good info! I'll add that to my "things to check" list.
