Default 1994 Grand Cherokee won't start

When I turn the key over, the dash lights light up but the starter does not crank the engine. Nothing. Interior lights, radio, locks all work.

I have ready that it may be the ignition or I am guessing that it could be the immobilizer.

i have not tried to connect a wire from the battery directly to the start solenoid to see it it turns over, but I believe it will as my daughter had been driving on and off all day.

Any ideas?

Thanks...rob

probably the security system. try unlocking the drivers door with the key. if that doesnt work, try the passenger door with the key. if that doesnt work, try the tailgate.

Have you load tested the battery?

Ok, here are the things I tried this morning:

1. Locked and unlocked using the key in all 3 doors.
2. Tried to start it in neutral.
3. Tried starting it while putting pressure on the transmission lever while it was in Park.
4. Disconnected the battery cables and cleaned the connectors and the battery posts. When I did this and tried to start it, the lights flashed like they should due to the immobilizer. Used the key in the tailgate and successfully turned off the immobilizer.

So it sounds like it is down to the ignition switch or the NSS.

One thing that I have not tried is to start it by running a wire from the battery to the starter. I have not done this because I am not sure where I should connect the wire to on the starter.

Put power on the small wire that goes to the solenoid. Of you put it on the big one, it will heat up instantly. That's the big one to the starter. The one with the cable on it shouldn't do anything. You can also jump the 2 big ones with a screw driver. When you do this, you're bypassing the solenoid and should get a heavy spark and the starter will crank.

Take the solenoid wire off and connect it to a meter. Turn the key over to start. You should get power on this wire then. If not, your problem is in the key circuit or NSS.

I have taken the ignition switch off (simple task), ohmed it out and it appears to be good. So I guess the next step is to take the wire off the solenoid and test it.

Tonight I will have someone else to help so things will get easier.

what is an easy way to test the NSS?

Thanks, but I have a stupid question.

When I search at Advanced Auto Parts for a replacement, I get a small unit that has 3 terminals and looks more like a plug than what I see here, http://www.bc4x4.com/tech/2010/jeep-...ty-switch-nss/

Here is what I found at Advanced, http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/web...+safety+switch
