I'm currently running 4.56 and 33s and it's not too bad. If 35s are in your future just go ahead and do the 4.56s and not mess with regearing twice. I'd take being a little over geared any day over ever running stock gears on 33s again lol
When you say, "not too bad" what do you mean exactly? High RPM at highway speeds? I usually cruise around 70mph. Could dial it back if needed.
Like I said, 33's are gonna happen for sure. 35's are more of an "I want" than an "I need" deal.

Good to know. Sounds like mine is too much of a DD to go to 4.88 if I do indeed go to 35's.

I would do 4.56's then. You'd be happy with them on 33's and 35's.
Im not sure of the actual RPM, didnt pay much attention to it, it wasnt screaming down the highway by any means, but if you were to drive a lot on the highway id do the 4.56's.
The drivability of the 4.88's with 35's around town and normal everyday driving is very good however. Id say its extremely close to stock.

At highway speeds the RPM is slightly higher but you can easily cruise at 70 mph with absolutely zero problem. No need to dial it back. You and I have the exact same plan. I'm currently on 33s with the plans to move to 35s in the very near future. I went with 4.56 because I'll take the small loss in power for a higher mpg. My XJ is my daily so 4.56 made more sense for me. If it wasn't my daily, I would have gone with 4.88.
Started working on a rear bumper. Got the mounts for the stock location welded up, started on the cross bar. It's all 1/4 wall steel. The ends of the rear bar are going to be angled up and I will be adding in rear quarter protection for the cut and fold.
Also recessed a receiver into the center of the bumper which will be used as a recovery point, wont be towing anything. The pin will be inserted on the back side of the bumper, I was able to get a lower exterior profile that way.
Only had a couple hours of free time over the weekend to start on it, more progress to come soon and it will also be getting tied into the frame.
Lack, what are using for front bump stops? What is the distance from the upper and lower bump stops while sitting on level ground? I find I am having to add more bump stop to keep the tires out of full stuff into the wheel wells. Doing this causes the front suspension to bottom out easily on bumpy dirt roads. Just looking to see how others deal with 35's and 4.5 to 5.5 inch lifts.

Im running upper daystar extended bumps and a 2-3" hard plastic spacer on the bottom. I have noticed the same thing though. Under compression on a dirt road i hit the bumpstops yet my tires still just barely rub the front inner wheelhouse under full stuff when crawling.
I need to add another 1/2"-1" of bumpstop to keep them from rubbing under flex but I feel it would be worse going down dirt roads.
Ill take some measurements when I get home if youd like.
Funny, I was just about to ask you "what's up next" and you post about the rear bumper. Like the idea of the of just putting the pin thru the back. If it's a recovery point, you won't have to mess with it much anyway.

Plans of adding a tire carrier as well?
I may add a tire carrier down the line. For now I dont have much need for one. All of our trips are relatively close to home and I carry a plug kit/compressor.
There will always be something in the works im sure. I need to get my lower doors and quarters sprayed with bedliner. I have the materials, just need to steal the paint booth one day after work.
A front selectable locker is also on the list but I want to see how the d-30/8.25 combo is going to hold up. Also have a set of replacement front doors that im going to make some custom half doors out of.
Few more items on the immediate list:
-Winch
-Wiring up a secondary fuse box/relay panel
-Custom switch panel in the center console
-re-do the headliner
-Rear disc conversion and booster upgrade
-rear cargo rack
