If anyone never has to replace brake lines either front or one to rear they are a pain in the ***. For me I had to literally remove entire driver side engine area to include brake booster and brake master cylinder. Mainly because my lines would not break free.
And the passenger front brake line runs from fender all the way routed behind engine along firewall/cowl. Big pain in the ***!
Got them all in so wish me luck once I button all engine stuff back up it will not leak lol.
Lucky Olympic 4x4 around the corner of my house had original lines on a junk XJ.
If I were to run new ones that probably would have been good in some way but bad because of all the bends, etc the original lines have.
I think it's as easy as unbolting the cable from a bracket on the transmission and routing in a new one. Is it just the clip that broke? Or the part where it adjusts and holds it? They sell just the replacement clips. As a temporary fix you could wrap the cable where it usually "clips" on and then wrap it with bailing wire.

Mine broke further up the cable or back. Look at photo and to left of pink plastic piece you will see another metal bracket where cable attaches to. Mine broke in that area.
I'll take photo tomorrow but I was thinking I could wire tie it down somehow with a heavy grade wire like you mentioned to prevent it from moving and see if it helps.
Again I'll take photo tomorrow if I can to better show you all what broke and maybe you guys have ideas for temp fix. I can order a new cable but they want like $66 shipped see if I can source one cheaper.

Maybe not a great idea, but I'll float it by you. Is it possible to use something like this?
I've used those on brake cables on personal projects - the heavy duty ones can hold up pretty well - but I have no idea if it'd hold up in this application.
I'm going to get you all a photo this afternoon and hopefully that will provide some insight on what broke. Then maybe a solution could be provided to get me by instead of purchasing a new cable. I could stop by Olympic 4x4 on my way home today just to ask them what they have. They just might have the cable already and for much cheaper than new as long as its all in good shape. I paid $50 for the OEM steel brake lines for passenger, driver, and one that runs to the rear axle this past week. Maybe more than I wanted to pay but they are heavy duty and solid steel lines.
Think I got XJ fixed no worries on buying shifter cable I was able to readjust it. Seemed good drove it about 10 miles today seemed to shift good.
I also picked this up today and starting the break down to learn all about it . This one supposedly had stretch chain too so if I can tear it down fix it I'll put this one back in Jeep.
Its much cleaner now as I attempted to break it down some before dinner.
Guy before me had a beefed up Samurai stretched with yota axles under it. He sold me the trailer and my XJ now has a way to the trails instead of renting a trailer or risk breaking down and not be able to get home.
$700 was asking price I walked away for $500. Its 144" deck on it so its a bit short but not for the XJ. When Jeep on trailer I still have a foot left.
