Same I'll attempt to put them in this coming weekend. I'll be home early Friday and wife is going out for the night so it will give me a little free time.

So before I dive deep into this TC 231 and attempt to fix it and put back in my XJ it occurred to me the 231 is a 23 spline input shaft.

Is there anyway to check my 242 to verify what spline shaft that one has? My thought is if I plan to use the 231 I'm gonna need to change the input shaft either by ordering one to match what I have or take mine out and use that input shaft.

Then the question comes to mind would it just be better to drop mine and fix that and don't bother with the 231? Some people say since mine is 89 that my 242 TC is the ****tier one in terms of reliability. Thoughts?

Options:

1. Build the 231 and change input shaft to new one or take mine out of the 242?

2. Just forget the 231 and remove my 242 and fix that one instead?

3. Is the 231 superior in durability and reliability then the 242?

So after few weeks goes by wondering what happened to my fifth wheel that never showed up I got a email last night saying one shipped. After looking more today sure enough its due to be delivered tomorrow.

Odd thing is I got refunded the $ and never got charged for the fifth wheel so I'm not sure whether I keep it or call and let them know and be honest.

Hmm....either way $43 if I have to pay I'll be happy to have my spare now just need to order another tire now.

Thanks CF I got my sticker this morning

Hope everyone else did too!!! Photo posted once I find that sweet spot for it on the Jeep.

On a side note my TC is out of Jeep as of last night. What a pita but its on the bench ready for dissection. While I'm at it I'll be hopefully swapping to my C8.25 axle before it all goes back in.

So... Now that you are at this point which is the true way to check it, how much play have you got in that ring and pinion? Does the Pinion try to slide forward and aft as pressure is applied?

I actually forgot to check I will do that in a bit. If its got lash beyond what its supposed to be think I'll just finish building my C8.25 and put that in instead.

Chain is ordered for TC that should be here later this week. I can't for the life of me fins the right rebuild bearing seal kit for it so I'm kind of stuck. Its a NP242J from a 1989. That's about all I know but so many variations online to look and I'm getting confused.

I know after all I have done on this jeep and now this kicking my *** lol.

I also ordered up the boostwerks shift kit to eliminate poor design factory setup. Been told I will thank many for finally doing that once I get it all back together and test it.

By forward and aft what do you mean?

When I try to spin it or grab yoke on back end it does spin very very little and entire gears inside and all slightly move. I can see some play but the whole thing does not move side to side as in side to side vehicle side only up and down as in top to bottom of jeep. If that makes any sense? I got a video but I'll have to link it from YouTube.

Well not much progress lately. Two things showed up yesterday. Transfer case chain, next week my shift plastic guides will be here too so I can start the reassemble and get this jeep back out of garage. Oh no photo but my boostwerks shift kit came!!!

Oh got another little surprise. I picked up a 95 XJ running and much better shape then my 89. Has a few janky things to fix expected when last owner was some young kid who didn't know anything about it.

Previous owner (not young kid) did snag rear tire hatch bumper and swapped his hatch to this one so it front match color. I drove it around block ran great and 4x4 goes in smooth and tested great. (This guy owned it for only a week before I got it)

Pictures to come maybe another build not sure what I'm do with it yet. For starters I'll be driving it as my truck is going under the knife for injector rebuild and possibly EGR delete.

After that I'm not sure if I'll swap parts from the 89 and ditch that rig and use this one instead or just fix it up and flip it. For what I got it for I stole it.
