For about a couple years now... a little hard to get, but well worth it in the end!

Well decided to scrap the "astro van" steering box and going with full hydro... and yes, I plan to drive her on the street/highway! Looking at putting together a slow (by hydro standards) ratio setup to aid the highway manners... realizing that the top speed may be somewhat limited for a safety margin.

Right now I'm thinking a 6.0 cu.in. load reactive steering unit combined with a 2.5"x8" stroke ram...

Just got my ram dropped off from PSC...

Not to certain on this but I'm pretty sure that full hydro steering setups are illegal on the streets.

Love the build! Been fallow for along time! Keep it up!!

Ya, that is one of those laws created by the internet...

Most states do not have "ANY" laws (vehicle code) in regards to steering or steering modifications. About 10 states have some wording about safety or safe condition and there is only two or three states that that border no modifications.... and I think it was Tennessee that was most stringent.

Here is a great link to educate yourself.... "lift laws"

I got a spare charlynn unit, but you gotta pick it up if ya want it. Full hydro on the street sucks. It gives no road feel, and will not naturally roll to center. In other words,it a handful at freeway speed.

Opinions seem to vary on this issue... with a load reactive steering unit, correct ratio and correct caster and toe settings, this should not be a handful on the street. System should have some road feel/feedback, return to center, manual steering capable and not too touchy!

I'll be sure to comment on the actual results....

Hydro on the street is becoming an old myth. Like said, with the load reacting orbitals, and proper castor, it should do everything it needs to on the street.
Im in the same position right now, thinking of going with a 6.0ish CI valve to slow it down so its not sketchy on the street. This is the only thing that really has a big affect on driveability,at least from what I understand so far. I have a few weeks before mine is back together.
Have you thought out your ram mount yet? I have been looking at a ton of options and Im curious to see what you end up with. Im inbetween just bending some tube and making mounts and the Artec ram mount.

It's debatable either way,but my experience has been the load reactive only work well with a double acting balanced cyl(i.e. Double ended ram) due to the even displacement in volume.
Just my exp. I have built a few just buggies, but all were sand cars ect.

Ah, good point. I kind of assume to be talking about DE rams when dealing with full hydro but that's not always true. In both of our cases we are referring to DE rams only anyway.

Most likely going to build a tube mount... mainly because I don't plan on keeping this axle. I want to build a RJ60 to put under her next year and then look at going with the Artec mount..
