Which side of this seal goes toward the transmission? This is the transfercase input seal. One side has rubber covering with a wider lip the other side has a narrower lip. Both sides have the spring retainer.

hard to tell, maybe a side shot so we can see the press fit of the lip.
otherwise, usually the metal ring edge goes to the outside, so you can tap it in and not destroy the rubber seal.
i've never had to replace that one, but i've replaced a few transfer case output seals on a few different jeeps.

Ok here's the side shot. The part that's covered with rubber has the wider sealing lip. The metal side has a peaked if you will sharp pointed sealing edge.

I went the other route and put the rubber out. I read the lip that's angled like that is to keep dirt out primarily. I can't believe there's not more info about this online.

Hate to say it, but I'm nearly 100% sure you installed it backwards. The little spring is meant to squeeze whatever shaft the seal is protecting. Additionally, I think you're going to have a ***** of a time removing with that metal lip pressed all the way in to seat against the inner shoulder. I suppose that if you didn't damage the rubber when pounding it in that it may still work, but man, I don't know if you'd even be able to get one installed that way without damaging the rubber in some way.

Regardless, best of luck,

-Matt

look at the seal photos the little spring is on both sides. If it only had 1 side with the spring that us the way it goes but when both sides have the spring then what?

Well that's a fair point, I missed that before. I would venture to say that the metal side should always go "out", but in this case it looks like it truly may not make much of a difference.

The way the rubber side is the lip kinda is long towards the outside so what I read from a seal manufacturer was that's suppose to be to keep mud and stuff out supposeably. I hope so cause it's a pain to pull the transfercase back out.

Some progress this weekend. Shoved 4 of those shims on each side. They are thin so it only did about 1/4in movement. Looks like I should make more, but I'm sure it's better.

Onto the rear. Got the relocates installed. Now it sits at about 42deg instead of 90. I think if we move back one hole it will be about 46deg. I may do that later, but that will also give me more lift and I should do the extended brake line first (Sunsong 2206110) but will once I do all the brakes at once,
but yes, much better in the rear.

Drives WAY better ha.
I'll do shocks soon. and rip off those dumb mud flap things.
