Hack n tap install, help with pre 89 seal placement
Hello, just started working on my hack n tap and was reading thru the instructions. They are extremely dim about where this seal goes and would like some help before bolting anything up. As you can see in the first pic there is a grove on one side of the seal flange which im not sure is to form around the lip of the transfer case, or whether the seal sits inside of it. Or if the seal goes on the outside, pictures will make a lot more sense of what I'm asking, just need to know which side of the flange that the seal goes. Thanks for any help in advance, Im thinking that the third picture is how it goes, just dont want to *** it up.

Put some RTV on the flange before you bolt it on. The side with the groove goes on the inside against the tcase housing. The shaft seal goes on after everything else just like the factory seal.

Sweet, thats what I thought. Thanks for the help. I assume just tap it on with a hammer lightly and evenly till its seated all the way?

Sense everyone is still up, anyone know what the minimum amount of the shaft you can cut off is? I know the minimum is 1 1/4 inch, But I want to keep as much of the splines as possible, im guessing you have to take off about a full inch to make complete contact with the oil seal?

Same exact thing im doing. Did you have to order a custom driveshaft or did the front shaft work? Just wondering because I noticed you have an 89 like mine and there is a disclaimer about the drive shaft if you have an 89 or older...

I have a 90 that I wheeled with a stock front driveshaft with no issues. Not sure if there are any differences bewteen an 89 and 90 since they were both Renix??

So I read through my instructions, have to go pickup the bits and tap, I was wondering if there were any tips for installation on a 92? I have the seal, but just curious if there's some tips, since this will be my first time doing this lol. Will I have any issue using my front driveshaft? Other than no 4wd.
Also, I bought my XJ with a 3-4'' lift on it already, and it has a t-case drop on it (which I'm removing), but I noticed this, and thought nothing of it until I saw the pictures above. What is this?

My buddy told me that the previous owner installed just the seal, for whatever reason, and there's a small chance he did a hack n tap, but unlikely. I bought a new seal from IRO with the HnT, so I'll use that anyway. Any tips on installation? I'm a little nervous, tbh.

Herres basic idea...Hack and Tap SYE Tutorial - YouTube
Yeah, that's why I bought the $40 seal with my HnT, but I was wondering about the red seal inside it. I'm sure there'd be more visible if there was already a hack n tap on it.
