I installed my SYE a couple weeks ago during my process to install a long arm setup. Since I am still putting the finishing touches on everything, it has done nothing but sit in the garage. What you see in the photo is the pre-lube as I have not filled the case yet. This is the Rugged Ridge kit and I installed everything that came with it. Am I missing an output shaft seal or is this how it's supposed to look? I did read about RR kits leaking all the time ...pretty much from day one ...so I ordered seal #3208474 just in case. Just looking for input since I cannot find decent photos online to answer my question. Thanks.
I can't exactly tell from this picture, but there should be a seal in front of the output bearing. The seal will seal against the machined surface of the splined end of the yolk. If there is no seal you need to add one. You may want to smear RTV on the yolk splines to help prevent leaks.
Some of RR syes leaks because of defective seals, but other units leaked because the yoke was machined too much and the seal wasn't even touching the yoke. U might want to measure the diameter of yoke and check if it's within specs
There is a post on another forum about that seal being the wrong one and a replacement that was tighter and better. Or you use a front out yoke instead, it actually seals a lot better. Had to go that way for a week while RR sent me a new yoke for the wrong one that was in the box.
dunno if it's my eyes or what, but that shiny bit just near the yoke...is that a spring or just a shine off the rubber??
If it's the spring (helps hold the seal tight to the yoke shaft), your seal is in backwards.
Good eye. Here are some more close-up photos. So I guess RR put the seal in backwards from the factory (or whoever does it for them)? Any issues leaving it like this?
Anyone else with an RR SYE have the seal in this position?
k, this is the first time i've EVER seen one like this (and i rebuilt trannys for a few years), but that seal has an inner AND outer spring. i have one sitting right here. So yes, it's installed correctly...
