Quote: great progress NJXJ. Ur gonna hate that 160 stat in the winter time...lol
You will have no heat.

Also the problem with running such a low temp stat is that the motor will be searching between open and closed loop and never reaching its designed temp setting. You will possibly burn more fuel because of this. You could run super to help offset the fuel issue, but the
"OVER COOLING" will still be a problem.

Most vehicles that run performance stats have a chip that will fool the cpu into closed loop, and "REQUIRING" to run super.

Now I am speaking from experience with doing this in mustangs and vettes, so I really don't know how the 4.0 will act. But I just wanted you to be well informed and know what to look out for.
please let me know how you make out with this.
Jay.
Yes I know about all of that haha...

In the winter I'll just take the 160tstat out no big deal. I really don't think it's going to make it run that much cooler. But I guess we'll have to wait to see...

The tstat has nothing to do with open/closed loop though. The 02 sensors determine that.

Another productive day! I cant stand not being busy so im always doing something..but today was set aside just for the jeep.. and maybe a few things on my gf's rav4. lol

First things first, I went to advanced and got some coolant. Everyone was telling me these xjs take 12 quarts ( 4gals) but i didnt believe it so i only bought 3. This is the first time in all my xjs/zjs that I was flushing the coolant believe it or not. It was raining all morning which i was pretty bummed about.. but then i realized wait a minute.... my new place has a garage, and a pit too!! ( A small garage, but hey its still a garage lol) so i backed the jeep inside out of the rain. As you can see in the pic it was a tight fit Had about 2 inches before the roof rack hit the door.

So after i got all setup the first thing i did was pop the aux fan and fan shroud out of the way by undoing the 4 8mm bolts up top, unplugged the aux fan and set it aside. Then i took the serp belt off by loosening the idler pulley bolt and then the adusting nut on the p/s pump, both 15mm bolts. Once i had all that out of the way it was onto the fan clutch. Using a combo of pry bars, puches , and screwdrivers i held the fan/clutch while i undid the four 1/2" bolts. Ive been meaning to buy the tool that acutaly holds the clutch. But my way worksjust fine. After takng out 4 more 1/2" bolts that hold the clutch onto the fan itself i finally had it apart. You can see how massive the zj clutch is compared to the stock unit! ( What a difference in performance too!) I popped the new clutch on the fan and installed it.

After that it was time to flush all of that old crappy coolant out of mmy jeep! Ive been waiting a WHILE to do this... and honestly the old stuff wasnt as dirty and crappy as i though it would be. which is a good thing. To flush it all out i bought a prestone flush and fill kit. It was 3.99 and it worked awesome.I started by taking the old thermstat out and cleaning the housing and then with the bolts finger tight i put thehousing back on with no tstat. I did this so that it would be easier to flush the whole sytem. Hooked my garden hose up to a t fitting i installed in the heater outlet hose and undid the bottom rad hose and turned on the garden hose.. I let it run throgh untill the water was clear and then put the bottom hose back on and fushed the complete sysetm out with the garden hose.

When i was satisfied with the flush i took the hose out and put the cap on the t fitting, took the thermostat housing back off and installed the 160deg t stat, along with a new gasket and some red RTV.

Then it was time to put my new gatorbelt on and fill her up!! Only one problem... They gave me the wrong belt, and the only place that carries these gatorbelts ( the best serp belt that you can get IMO) only had this one in stock which is for the AMC 4.2 carbuerated l6. So i returned that one and my new one is on order. So i ended up having to put the old belt back on untill i get the new one in tomorrow night.. no big deal.

So all in all, was this day of work worth it?? HECK YES! After i filled the jeep up with coolant and burped it me and my gf took it for a ride and what a difference. That ZJ clutch pushes air like nobodies business!! We got ice cream and i purposely left the jeep running just to see how it would do. It stayed right at 195 the whole time. Maybe even a tad cooler when in motion. The big test will be during the really hot days in the summer sun in traffic, red lights, and wheeling. But i am VERY confident that my jeep will be just fine now. Come winter the oem 195tstat will go back in.

The jeep wasn't overheating or anything. This is really just preventative. I know how these jeeps like to run hot in the summer. Especially at a stop.

I'll be installing the fast idle switch sometime this week. I'll be sure to take pics and explain the process.

Bonus pics! I got my girlfriend Angela to tighten the clamp on the upper radiator hose! She wouldn't put down my screwdriver after that. Lol

In between working on the jeep I also changed the cabin filter and took the intake and throttle body apart for cleaning in her rav4. It had a very very bad shake at idle and sometimes idled so low I thought it would stall. After cleaning the throttle body, butterfly valve, all the sensors and the whole intake it runs like a brand new car! I'd say it was time to change that cabin filter huh? Lol

Ok cool. I wasn't sure if it did or not.

So why is a ZJ clutch fan better if its used for the same motor?
Or was the clutch fan you got from a V8 ZJ???. ...
I might want to do this mod to.

Also would the bigger clutch fan require more power from the motor to run?
thus lowering h/p????....

Thank u sir....

The two things I was warned about the zj clutch were noise and power loss. But honestly I'm not worried about that minut loss of power. It's unnoticeable. What is noticable is the amount of air it pushes and how much cooler it keeps my engine. Which is what I was shooting for. If I'm not mistaken it's from the l6 out of the zj. I got the part # on jeep forum so that's how I asked for it at the auto parts store.

In combo with the 160deg t stat and my freshly flushed system it's sitting below 210 at all times even when sitting idle in the hot sun. I'm a happy camper.
