I really wish the swap was done. I still have to get my ECM tune, VSS, and flex plate figured out. I'm also regasketing the motor while it's out. I wanted to put my new uppers on after I got them, but the damn exhaust routes right in front of the bolts. No way I'm dropping the exhaust till the engine has to come out.

Subbed! Haven't got to look through all of it yet, but love what I see so far. It's funny our names are basically the same, and your build is basically going the same way mine is. I like to consider it professional procrastination. Of course, life and the empty pockets are constantly in my way. You've got a little more resources at hand than I do, so mine will probably take even longer, lol. It has been all work and mostly no play so far as I battle rust and work to prevent it, not to mention tackling 4 or 5 different projects at one time with it.
That paint you used looks like good stuff, I haven't seen that one. I have a can of Chassis Saver beside me here that I plan on slathering all over everything. Sounds like water when I shake it around. Did you use that stuff on your axles too?

Do you have a build thread for your XJ? I'd like to check yours out and see your approach to your build.

I've never used Chassis Saver myself, but my friend just used it on his truck project for his frame. That stuff looks pretty nice.

You have the same problem as I do, multiple projects. I'm learning to focus on one at a time, but man, is it hard. I wish my pockets were a little less empty, but I have two houses I'm working on now and all the money leaching fun that comes with them. The Jeeps get put on the back burner a lot because of it.

I've used the Valspar Anti-Rust Armor and their Tractor & Implement paint on a few axles, my plows, trailers, truck frames, truck bodies, suspension parts, etc. I really like their products. The aerosol flows nice, goes on smooth, and dries pretty fast. I always pull off the nozzles on empties and save them to use on cheapy spray paint cans. The brush on stuff is nice as well, I think it'd work well through a gun. Lots of color options as well.

I went to the jy today and they finally had the right year YJ for my tcase build. I'll start ripping the case apart later this week. I'll probably install a SYE while I'm at it. I'm toying with the idea of adding a Teraflex 2lo kit, but I'm not sure if I'll go that route or not yet.
I also picked up some Edelbrock shocks earlier this month for when I add some more lift. Cage and 2x6 rockers are going in mid-November. Things are finally coming together on this build!

Tore apart the 231 case out of the Wrangler today. Thought I'd post some pics of the parts I'm using to build my case for comparison.
L. 241C 6 gear planetary vs R. 231J 3 gear planetary
L. 241C range hub vs R. 231J range hub
L. 23 spline long input vs. R. 21 spline short input
Input and planetary all together:
More updates soon.

Sub'd… man this build rocks, I thought about doing a cheap JY type of build, but time & lack of most tools & room made me go with a newer XJ (2001) and bolt on parts. Keep up the posts, really like the personal touches on the motor (polishing & nice paint jobs).

Now on to the meat and potatoes...
I knew that a 207 case has a 1.25" chain. I had read in my research of people using the front output shaft for the wide chain upgrade. Since I have a spare 207 from the Donorkee, I decided to rip into it last night to see if it would work.
As soon as I opened the case up, I knew there was no way the front output was going to work.
L. is the 207 front output and R. is the 231J front output. Can you see the problem?
While the front output will fit in the front half of the case and the yoke will bolt up, the issue lies in the rear half of the case. The snout of the 207 output doesn't reach the bearing. There is no way in hell you'd want to run it this way. This leaves the 231 HD, 231 D out of a Ram 1500, or some 231C with a 4.3L (double check) to source your front output. Well, or you could buy a wide chain kit, but what fun is that?
And finally, here's a picture comparing the 1" to the 1.25" chain.
So things didn't work out as I had hoped, but that's to be expected when you're cobbling parts together. This is also proof that you can't believe everything you read on the internet. It often takes your own successes and failures to figure out a solution to a problem.
More updates in the near future.

Almost forgot, I also picked up a Warn hub kit last night. Don't worry, that pic doesn't show everything I got. I picked it up for a great price and thought I may use it when I switch to a non-disco d30. For now it's going in my pile of might use parts.
