Yea they do, but from my experience with them, they are actually pretty lenient and won't bother you unless, you do something really bad.

The way I understand it is this: If you are higher than the designated height you could be made to lower the lift since there's nothing you can do to change the recorded GVWR. If you look unstable or appear to be unstable, you could be sent for the tilt test regardless of your lift height. I could be wrong, but they kinda go hand in hand if you think about it. I got my door sill information from calling Winslow inspection station. I couldn't find it in writing specifically anywhere, but that's not to say it isn't out there.
Better lift Law information can be found HERE.

Not unless the hardware is that much heavier, it will change your registration fee. And I think the markings are max and it is rated less. I don't know for sure. But if that is the case, changing the I6 to a V will change the weight. I don't know about spacers but wider wheels and tires can change the stability. And the tires can make it heavier. Anyone up for a truck stop with a stock XJ and a mod one? I think that will say who's heaviest, when we get on the scales!

So true! Forgot about that! I'm about to go to Ridgefield Park and ask Apache (Too many Native American tribal names) if they will. I wouldnlike to see how much my XJ will weight after a 3 inch lift!

According to much of what I read earlier today, you can modify the weight of the vehicle (my XJ weighs upwards of 4800#) but that's not what they use. They use your factory GVWR. In other words they go by some sort of standard # for that model or a sticker on the vehicle. Based on what I've read, my XJ is pretty much deeply in violation. There's a surprise after all the pains I've taken ...
Regardless, I've never had any issue with inspection with respects to lift or stability.

I doubt you will. I think they have accepted the fact that XJ's are awesome!

I know you can have the gvwr changed on your vehicle but if I remember its a pita, a friend of mine had it changed on his standard cab short bed pickup to 10,000ib rating, now he can run 44s or larger on the streets.
