Well if I'm not mistaken, some guys got sent home by a local LEO on Sun at the M&G for not having a sticker for the stability test on their heep. I think the oversize inspection might still be in effect. Plus if they find you in violation they can send you to get inspected.

I'm pretty sure you would still need a tilt test done if the jeep has a pretty good lift on it(probably anything over 4.5") I'm gonna look further into this one lol

I'm going to look on the DMV site. If not, I'll just have to call and ask. Maybe they will be able to clarify. Thinking about it, 4.5 or higher would make sense.

... did this really happen sunday? if it did i'm surprised. did the cop look at everybodys stickers or just the big jeep's? they way i thought that worked was if the guy at the regular inspection station thought a tilt test was necessary he would have to refer you to the oversized DMV inspection station. so its kind of a gray area wether or not your jeep is big enough. i asked them if i had to do it and they said my jeep wasn't lifted enough lol
Edit: I went thru regular inspection with 5" lift & 32s, but there is no gray area. The statute says for a vehicle our size/weight the bottom of the door can't be more than 30" from the ground. With 5" lift mine was only 24' from the ground. The MJ which is close in height/weight to the XJ was visibly way oversize. The cop was right, but I'm surprised he came all the way into the Ranger staging area to enforce.

They were huge! The Dodge truck was running 44" boggers & I'm guessing the MJ was running like 40s too. Stuck out like sore thumbs ... LEO prolly saw them a mile away. Funny thing is, there were other Jeeps there that were in violation but he barely looked.

I think it all depends how big it looks. 6" on a xj with 33's doesn't look that huge compared to some other trucks stock.
I pulled up to inspection with 33's and 5 inches of lift and they just looked at it for a few extra things in the front end and that was it. Passed with no questions or problems.

A vehicle the size & weight of a (stock) Cherokee is allowed to be lifted only so high that the bottom of the driver door is no higher than 30" off the ground. It's a black & white issue. I have the information on another forum, but it'll take me some time to dig thru all my subscribed threads.
Exactly 1 year ago I went thru with 5" & 32 x 12.5" rubber. They didn't even blink. However, consider that if I had rolled up with super skinny tires they would have had reason to question my stability. A lot of issues surrounding getting the tilt test has to do with your stability, rather than your lift height. I have 6-7" right now as did a friend of mine. He was made to do the tilt test even tho his doors were not 30" off the ground. Problem is, he had some stability issues stemming from the design of his bumpers. To further complicate things, when he took them off, the XJ gained lift height due to the weight reduction. Pain in the ***. With my 7", last fall my XJ was so tippy on the 33x12.50s, I had to be strapped at Rausch several times to keep the heep from going over. Hence I am shopping for a wider stance before hitting the rocks again.
But you get my point. The tests aren't there to inconvenience us, they are for safety. Build your Jeep responsibly & there will be no issues.

sounds like it still kind of a gray area since you said your buddies jeep's doors were less the 30' from the ground but he still had to get a tilt test because it "looked" unstable, just saying lol... but either way with these new inspection rules i'd imagine the guys at the inspection station are less likely to make you get a tilt test since they don't seem to care about anything else.

They move around a lot and have jurisdiction throughout the state.
[ http://www.nj.gov/dep/njstateparkpolice/index.htm] In the past, I've seen them occasionally, at random times and places.
Nowadays, they seem to show up when someone posts a meet and greet.
Coincidence, or, are there some self proclaimed forest wardens dropping a dime ( I mean a quarter).
I'm sure there are some Sierra club members watching the websites they've seen posted on Jeep windshields, right?
Oh oh, we're getting pretty far off topic.
