Scored me another 8.25 rear end for $75 really hoping it has a locker. If it does may swap it out. If not I'll have one to build. It's the 27 spline so to make it the 29 all I should have to do is just switch the spider gears right?

I bought a '99 today. It has it's fair share of issues, but for $700 it's worth the risk and the chance and I may learn a thing or two.

The oil sending unit is failing. It works if you wiggle it around. I think the valve cover gasket is leaking a bit. The front sway bar bushing is gone. Cylinder #1 and #4 are not firing... seems to be an issue with the injectors (harness or PCM) according to the code it is throwing.

Where do you guys recommend getting parts?

No, the carriers are different, you will actually have to get a whole new carrier, shafts and everything, then you would have to have the gears set. So you are honestly better off just finding a whole 29 spline

awesome thanks for the info. so it would be better to just swap the entire assembly, which is what i figured. but if it doesn't have a l.s.d. then who makes one for the 8.25? i can't seem to find one anywhere.

If it's not a daily driver and you have the time, order stuff online it's typically cheaper(rockauto.com). Napa is where I tend to go. If there's something to replace might as well upgrade if it's an option.

Unless you are running large tires. I would not worry about having a 27spline instead of a 29 spline.

LSD's are made for both. Eaton makes a good lsd. Or you could go with an auto locker

I run a welded rear end and its my daily. Just wears the tires more. And probably will suck come winter. LOL

Ya,My 96 is locked in the back and its a constant battle to keep it from going sideways on snowy or slick roads.Going up even a slight grade when slick is tricky unless in 4wd.

That's awesome! I bet they have to pull straws or something to choose who gets that patroll because that would be a blast.

I'm having the jeep towed to my place this evening. I already have a full cart of parts on RockAuto.com. It's a '99 Limited I picked up for $700.

I am on the lookout for a PCM, as I think that is my issue with cylinders #1 and #4 not firing.

Welcome to the show. I'm new to the Cherokee world myself. There is a lot of good info on this site.
