True if it doesn't have abs its most likely a 8.25...

If it is 8.25 its most likely a 27 spline (96) and not comparable to yours, or Ryan's 29 spline... However I wouldn't worry about it unless your plainning to go bigger then 33's... But build and lock one axle, do it right the first time

If you don't have a storage place, then I would either check to make sure yours is a 29, if its not I personally would get a 29 spline, or a D44, which ever you can come across for cheap first with a matching ratio... (most likely the 29 spline)

I wouldn't worry to much about locking the front without alloys unless your 33's + then I would alloy front and rear but not a must (on my to do list)

the 8.25 and the D35 had thread in style and rubber plugs. I thought the same thing untill I was shown a D35 with a rubber plug... and saw an early 8.25 with a threaded plug in the JY...

Also, if your going to lock it, upgrading your axle shafts is not a bad idea IMHO.
Well I'm a newbie pretty much so I don't really know what to expect from it & I don't do much hard core wheeling... Yet, but I've been to Moab once and did few trails and I want to be able more so I want a locker, I know it depends alot on the drivers knowledge but I want my rig to be capable to do more....

I've seen it too, seems there for a while that they were throwing design ideas around between the two. From a quality standpoint, why they decided to go with the rubber plug into the later years is beyond me, I'm no engineer but the threaded plug is a much better design. I'm thinking it must have been a cost saving measure. X number of units times the cost of producing a threaded cover and installing the thread in plug versus a rounded out hole with a plastic plug that pops right in, probably got some A-hole a big *** bonus!

How can I tell if it's a 29 spline? Or is that just by the year?

1996, It's most likely a 27 spline if its the housing it came with.
